Grand Theft Auto V — Three Men, One State, a Decade That Would Not End

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V is the rare crime story that begins with a botched score in the snow and then spends a decade pretending the snow never happened.

The single-player game is a 2013 heist picture with three leads. The life of the product is something else: a 2013 disc that became a 2014 disc that became a 2015 PC port that became a 2022 current-gen patch, while Grand Theft Auto Online turned the same map into a live service that outlasted the console generation it was built for. Take-Two’s fiscal update for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 put V at more than 230 million units sold-in. The sequel is three months away. The old game is still on the earnings call.

This is an independent retrospective. Shipment numbers come from Take-Two. Online’s launch failures are on Rockstar’s own patches. Fan theories about cancelled single-player DLC are labeled as such.

Launch, and then launch, and then launch again

Rockstar announced V on 25 October 2011 and showed a trailer a week later. A projected Q2 2013 window moved to 17 September 2013 so the team could polish. That day it shipped worldwide on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Take-Two said first-day retail sell-through exceeded US$800 million, excluding Japan and Brazil. Three days in, the company said it had passed US$1 billion. Guinness later logged a stack of records: fastest entertainment property to US$1 billion, highest-grossing game in 24 hours, and the rest of the 2013 trophy shelf. Those figures were company estimates and later industry tallies, not a steam counter.

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions arrived 18 November 2014 with first-person view, longer draw distance, and denser traffic. The PC version, delayed past a planned January 2015 date, landed 14 April 2015 with 4K and 60 fps headroom and the Rockstar Editor. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S received the Expanded & Enhanced build on 15 March 2022. PC got those enhancements in a free update on 4 March 2025.

Development had started around IV’s 2008 release. More than a thousand people across Rockstar studios worked on it. Analysts put combined development and marketing north of US$265 million, which would have made it the most expensive game yet. Rockstar has not published an official budget.

Grand Theft Auto Online launched 1 October 2013, two weeks after the campaign. Players could not connect. Characters vanished. Rockstar patched on 5 October and 10 October and later credited GTA$500,000 to accounts that had gotten in. The heist update players wanted did not arrive until 10 March 2015. The service kept growing anyway.

Los Santos, done again on purpose

The map is a Southern California state called San Andreas: Los Santos for Los Angeles, Blaine County for the rural north. Aaron Garbut said the world was large enough to hold Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas (2004), and IV inside it. The 2004 game had split attention across three cities. Dan Houser later said that choice had limited how well they could fake Los Angeles. V is the correction: one metro, a lot of mountain, a lot of water, and almost no loading screen.

The team used field photography, video, census data, and Google Maps projections for the road net. The satire is 2013’s: self-help, reality television, yoga, defense contractors, social media that still thought it was a joke. The main story is set in 2013. The prologue is 2004, in Ludendorff, North Yankton — Fargo weather, not California.

You can roam the whole map from early on. That was a break from IV’s island locks. The wanted system tops out at five stars. Health regenerates to half. Fixed-wing aircraft return because the map is big enough to need them.

Michael, Franklin, Trevor

The design goal, present from the start and originally dreamed about during San Andreas, was three protagonists you can swap between in the world and in missions. Hardware had made that impossible in 2004. IV’s two episodes had already tested new leads in the same city. V puts all three on one stick.

Michael De Santa, born Michael Townley, is voiced by Ned Luke: a retired bank robber hiding under an FIB deal in a Vinewood house that does not like him. Franklin Clinton, voiced by Shawn Fonteno, repossesses cars for a crooked dealer in South Los Santos and wants a bigger room. Trevor Philips, voiced by Steven Ogg, lives in a Blaine County mess of meth, guns, and grievances, and believes Michael died in the snow.

Each man has a special: Michael slows combat, Franklin slows driving, Trevor hits harder and takes less. Skills rise with use; each has a default expertise. Heists hire AI accomplices who take a cut and get better if they live. Some scores offer a stealth plan and a loud plan. That choice is the campaign’s real toy.

The story, including the three doors

In 2004, Michael, Trevor, and Brad Snider rob a town in North Yankton. It goes wrong. Michael is officially dead. Nine years later he is in Los Santos, married, miserable, and still on a leash held by FIB agent Dave Norton. Franklin meets him trying to take his son’s car. They become a team after Michael destroys a house that belongs to a drug lord, Martin Madrazo, and needs jewelry-store money to pay for the tantrum. Lester Crest, a hacker in a grim apartment, plans the store.

Trevor sees the job on the news and recognizes the planning. He was told Michael died. He finds him. The reunion is not sweet.

From there the lives unwind on separate spools. Michael’s family leaves. He tries the movie business and makes an enemy of billionaire Devin Weston. Franklin spends the middle game pulling Lamar Davis out of traps set by Harold “Stretch” Joseph. Trevor starts a one-man war against The Lost, street gangs, Merryweather, and triad boss Wei Cheng.

Dave and his superior, Steve Haines, force Michael back into government work: hit an IAA armored car, steal a nerve agent, then break into the FIB building so Haines can erase evidence. Michael erases his own file too. Trevor learns Brad was never in prison — he died in 2004 and was buried under Michael’s name. The desert shootout that follows almost kills Michael. Franklin pulls him out. Trevor does not forgive him, but he also refuses to let anyone else finish the job.

The last professional score is the Union Depository. It works. Then Franklin is offered a different job by the men who used him. Haines and Norton want Trevor dead. Weston wants Michael dead. The player picks one of three official endings:

Kill Trevor. Kill Michael. Or refuse both and, with Lamar and Lester, wipe out Cheng, Stretch, Haines, and Weston.

If Franklin kills one friend, the other relationship ends and life goes quiet. If he saves both, the three stop working together and remain friends. Rockstar has not named a canon. The “Deathwish” ending is the one most players treat as the real one. That is folklore with a high completion rate, not a studio decree.

Set pieces people still run back

The jewelry store is the mission that taught a generation how V’s heists feel: multiple roles, a plan, a street that panics correctly. The Paleto Bay bank job is the small-town version that goes loud. The FIB tower climb is the campaign’s vertical act. The Union Depository is the gold-standard finale the trailers promised.

“By the Book” is the other kind of set piece. It makes the player torture a man for the FIB. Reviewers in 2013 called it political commentary and also called it cheap. The Japanese version cut the torture gameplay. That mission is part of the game. It is not a boast.

Online later built its own monuments on the same asphalt: the 2015 Heists, bunkers and nightclubs, The Diamond Casino & Resort (2019), the Cayo Perico island (December 2020), The Contract with Franklin and Dr. Dre (December 2021), The Chop Shop, and, in 2025–26, A Safehouse in the Hills — mansions, Michael back in rotation, a Mission Creator. GTA+ is the subscription sitting on top; a free month of it is now part of how Rockstar sells VI pre-orders. That is a different story with the same weather.

Radio, score, and the city talking to itself

Fifteen music stations and two talk stations launched with more than 241 licensed tracks. The later-gen versions added 162 more. Flying Lotus hosts FlyLo FM and wrote original material for it. Los Santos Rock Radio, West Coast Classics, Radio Los Santos, The Lab, Rebel Radio, and Blaine County Talk Radio are the stations that still define a drive up the Great Ocean Highway.

The original score is not a single composer’s theme. Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson, The Alchemist, and Oh No worked for years. Reviewers who liked the campaign often pointed at the score under the shootouts more than any one radio hit.

In-game phones open contacts, the internet, and a stock market you can actually manipulate after missions. That last system is a sandbox joke that became a guide-site industry.

What was new, besides the obvious

Character swapping is the headline. Heist planning is the structure. First-person, from 2014 on, is the perspective shift the series had avoided in its 3D era. Mechanical refinements — shooting, cover, driving that critics said finally had weight without IV’s stubbornness — are the unglamorous reason it still plays.

You can buy businesses and garages, trade stocks, scuba, BASE jump, sit in a cinema. Wanted levels use a search circle on the minimap. Mid-mission checkpoints arrived after years of series complaints. None of that is as famous as Trevor, and all of it is why a 2013 game could be re-sold for twelve years.

Aftermath: money, arguments, a service that ate the sequel’s homework

V shipped nearly 29 million copies to retail in six weeks, more than IV’s lifetime at that point. By August 2014, sell-in on last-gen was over 34 million. By December 2014, 45 million including the new-gen disc. MarketWatch, citing the company’s run rate, called it the most profitable entertainment product ever around 2018, with estimates near US$6 billion. Barron’s put lifetime revenue around US$8.5 billion by late 2023. The Hindu, in May 2025, put the figure near US$10 billion. Take-Two’s June 2026 quarter said more than 230 million units sold-in; the whole Grand Theft Auto series was near 475 million.

It won Game of the Year at the Golden Joysticks and Spike VGX, among others. BAFTA gave it British Game, Game Design, and Multiplayer (for Online). Critics who loved the systems sometimes shrugged at the story. Trevor split rooms. Portrayals of women drew a widely discussed GameSpot review and a petition that Australian Target and Kmart briefly honored in December 2014 by pulling the game. Transphobic pedestrian content was removed from the 2022 current-gen version except in Director Mode, after advocacy and criticism that included a Kotaku essay by Carolyn Petit. Lawsuits from Lindsay Lohan and Karen Gravano were dismissed in 2016.

Dataminers, after a December 2023 source-code leak attributed by reporters to the Lapsus$ orbit, said at least eight single-player DLC sets had been cancelled. Rockstar has not confirmed that list. What is confirmed: the company poured the years after 2013 into Online and Red Dead Redemption 2, not into a single-player expansion pack.

The long goodbye that is not a goodbye

V is still here. Online still patches. Michael has even been pulled into Online events, a crossover that would have sounded like fan fiction in 2013 and is now just a Newswire post. A PC version that can look like a tech demo sits next to a 360 disc that still boots.

Grand Theft Auto VI will open in Leonida with two leads and a marketing campaign that already includes Netflix. Officially, V remains a separate single-player story in the same HD universe. Folklore wants a cameo, a stock ticker, a Vinewood billboard that winks. Maybe. Not confirmed.

What V proved, expensive and then endlessly, is that Rockstar can build a place so complete that leaving it becomes the hard part. The snow in North Yankton was supposed to be a grave. It turned out to be a foundation. The next game does not have to beat 230 million to matter. It has to be a place people do not want to unload.

Until 19 November, this is still the map.
