GTA 6 in LOVE Magazine Issue 27: What It Revealed

Official Grand Theft Auto VI artwork of Jason and Lucia
Official Rockstar artwork, not a LOVE scan. Image: Rockstar Games.

A Paris fashion magazine just did more for Jason and Lucia’s backstory than two trailers did. LOVE Issue 27 went on sale on Monday 5 October 2026 with a Grand Theft Auto VI cover, four screenshots and a long interview with seven people from Rockstar. We read every outlet that read the issue. Here’s what’s actually in it, who said what, and what it doesn’t say, no matter what the thumbnails tell you. Desk stamp: 7 October 2026.

Longreads: How Rockstar Actually Builds a GTA: Road Trips With Cops, Eight-Week Milestones and a Writers' Room for Pedestrians · Lucia Is From Liberty City: What GTA 6's Ties to GTA 4 and GTA 5 Do (and Don't) Tell Us

Label first: everything here is Reported. It’s a magazine interview with named Rockstar staff, printed by LOVE and quoted by outlets that have the issue (GTAVice, RockstarINTEL, Kotaku, Polygon, VGC, Eurogamer, GamesRadar, GTA BOOM). It isn’t a Rockstar Newswire post, and the stills aren’t on rockstargames.com. GTA6 NOW is independent. We are not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive or LOVE.

The eight things worth knowing

  1. Lucia grew up in Liberty City. Writer Alexa D’Agostino, on writing her: “my mother was an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, close to Lucia’s hometown of Liberty City.” Rockstar’s own bio already mentioned “their days in Liberty City.” This doesn’t make Liberty City playable. Nothing in the interview says that.
  2. Lucia is the engine, Jason is the brake. That’s LOVE’s framing, and narrative chief Rupert Humphries broadly agrees: “Lucia had to be someone who wanted a better life for herself, and wouldn’t let the obstacles in the way of that life stop her getting it.”
  3. Jason’s crimes come from his circumstances. Humphries: “We didn’t want to make any kind of statement with Jason’s backstory. It needs to be understood that he takes the measures he does—drug trafficking and becoming a bank robber, etc.—because of his material circumstances.” Whether he needs to, or is just “wired differently,” is left to you.
  4. Raul is the heist mentor. Jason and Lucia are meant to be young and naive. Big GTA heists need someone who knows the job, so Rockstar wrote in “an older mentor character” with the local and criminal knowledge they lack. That’s Raul Bautista. He isn’t a mission list. Raul’s page.
  5. The American Dream got smaller. Humphries: “Maybe the American Dream is more modest now. It’s a house for your family and your loans paid off instead of wild success—but maybe today, that is just as out of reach for the average person.”
  6. Politics, yes. Real politicians, no. Election signs, campaign robocalls, radio ads and political talk shows. But nothing “too specific about any particular person, event, movement.” LOVE asked about the “Vote Erin Henshaw” sign in an official Ambrosia screenshot.
  7. “There is no background.” Rockstar started a Los Angeles writing team that does nothing but pedestrian dialogue, plus advertising and comedy writers in New York, LA and London. Writing director James Horton: “In a way, there is no ‘background’ in this game; there’s just foreground that you’re not paying attention to right now.”
  8. How a GTA gets built. Rob Nelson: the team works in eight-week milestones, reviews each one, and sets the next. “We work our way there, year after year, one obsessive day at a time, course-correcting as we go.”

The four screenshots

LOVE printed four stills, first shown on its Instagram on 2 October. They’re magazine-supplied Rockstar images and they aren’t on Rockstar’s media page, so we describe them here instead of rehosting them. Our news posts carry the reveal: the cover and stills · the armed diner and the pool table.

StillWhat’s in the frameWhat people read into it
DinerJason and Lucia across a booth, both holding pistols under the table, an empty duffel bag beside Lucia.Fans and GameSpot line it up with the opening of Pulp Fiction. Rockstar hasn’t said so. Unverified.
MotorcycleJason in a leather jacket and aviators on a custom bike, holding a pistol; Lucia walks past with a cigarette and a holdall.New outfits. That’s it.
Pool hallJason in a “Steel Horse Motorcycles” tank top under red light; Lucia with a cue.An in-world brand. No location named.

RockstarINTEL also ran an “expanded” version of one still, from readers’ photos of the printed page. We haven’t seen a fifth new official image.

Who talked

NameRole, as printedWhat they covered
Rob NelsonCo-studio head, Rockstar NorthEight-week milestones; realism only when it helps immersion; “We hope people will want to escape into these worlds and these characters.”
Aaron GarbutCo-studio head, Rockstar NorthResearch road trips through Miami, the Keys and Key West; “We travel around with cops and with gang members”; the helicopter that ended up over a Beyoncé concert.
Rupert HumphriesSVP, narrativeSatire and politics; the American Dream; Jason’s backstory; why Raul exists.
Michael KaneVP, artThe “crazy nuance” in clothing, styling, cosmetics and hairstyles across Leonida’s regions.
James HortonWriting director (open world)The LA pedestrian-dialogue team; “No one you meet is an extra.”
Elizabeth Gauvey-KernWriterLucia’s actress “brought a lot to the character”; both leads vulnerable, tough and flawed.
Alexa D’AgostinoWriterLucia’s Liberty City roots; a woman who can “stand tall next to the likes of Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic.”

The interviewee list is GTAVice’s, from the full printed piece; RockstarINTEL, GTA Intel and Kotaku confirm the quotes they ran. Everyone Rockstar has put in front of a magazine this year: Rockstar’s people on the record.

LOVE vs Game Informer

Two magazines in one week, and they did different jobs. Game Informer (29 September) went for the world. LOVE went for the people.

What LOVE did not say

  • No launch hour, price change, PC version or Online date.
  • No radio station names, no new regions, no named missions.
  • No name for Lucia’s actress. Rockstar still hasn’t named her, so neither do we.
  • No “Liberty City is in the game.” It’s Lucia’s past, not your map.

Don’t fall for these

  • Debunked “Rockstar confirmed an official GTA 6 update for 5 October.” That was the day the magazine went on sale. No patch, no Newswire.
  • Unverified “Hundreds of writers.” That’s an outlet’s sentence, not a figure Rockstar gave.
  • Unverified “The diner shot is a Pulp Fiction homage.” A good-looking comparison. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed it.
  • Unverified The exact Beyoncé concert date and stadium. Garbut told the story; a fan matched it to an April 2016 permit. That match isn’t Rockstar’s.
