GTA 6 character switching — Reported open-world switch

Nelson told IGN you switch between the two leads in the open world. Some story beats lock it. Romance, shared schedules, and “relationship meters” on X stay starred unless press named them.

What Rockstar printed

Trailer 1, 4 December 2023, names Lucia walking a prison corridor. Trailer 2, 6 May 2025, speaks both full names at a penitentiary desk: Lucia Caminos, Jason Duval. The same day Rockstar published two short bios on the VI people pages. That locks the pair. It still does not print a switch glyph on the VI site.

Take-Two’s 24 June 2026 pre-order release calls Grand Theft Auto VI “a single-player experience.” The Xbox listing repeats it. Launch remains 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Open-world switching between two campaign leads is not a second co-op SKU. See the co-op hub. Hardware list: platforms.

What press added on 27 August Reported

IGN’s Rockstar North visit is the source. Nelson played; IGN published the systems list the same day as the Extended Look Netflix window. Our desk write-up is cops, clothes, car, and the couple. Eurogamer matches IGN on the wanted side; the switch line is IGN’s session note. Side activities that show up on tape vs preview extras live on side activities.

Open-world switch between Jason and Lucia. Can lock on some story beats.
Solo or summon the other by call or text for a job or to hang out.
In a car: swap seats — passenger shoots, driver drives, or passenger runs the radio.
They remain partners in crime either way. Nelson told press you cannot dump them. Romance is optional time spent together, not a combat buff.

What X is still guessing Not confirmed

Starred lines are community add-ons. Not in the IGN HQ list. Not a Newswire.

* A visible relationship health meter that changes unique cutscenes. IGN said closeness affects the story. It did not describe a meter UI.
* GTA V-style betrayal endings. Nelson said the bond changes how the story plays. He did not name a betrayal ending.
* A co-op combat bible or drop-in multiplayer. Dual leads plus switching is still a single-player SKU.
