June 24, 2026. Pre-order day. You open the store and see two numbers that look like a dare: $79.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Ultimate. Same launch. Same November 19. No early access hour hiding in the fine print.

Rockstar Support and the editions page spell the split in plain English: Standard is the full single-player campaign. Ultimate is a digital upgrade pack of vehicles, weapons, shops, and a compound threaded chapter by chapter through Jason and Lucia's story.

If you only buy one SKU, buy the game you will finish. The extra twenty dollars buys toys and storefronts, not a second campaign.

Claim. Ultimate Edition is not a fuller story at launch; it is a $20 digital content tier on top of the same November 19 campaign.

Evidence. Rockstar Newswire and storefronts (24–25 June 2026): Standard $79.99, Ultimate $99.99, concurrent launch. Rockstar Support (updated 18 August 2026): Ultimate digital-only; physical Standard is code-in-box; Standard owners can buy the Ultimate Upgrade after redeem. Editions page: bonuses unlock "behind each chapter."

Verdict. Confirmed on price, format, upgrade path, and chapter gating. Reported: TheGamer's "locked doors" critique of map shops. Unverified: exact post-launch standalone upgrade sticker price.

  1. 6 Nov 2025 — Rockstar locks worldwide launch to 19 Nov 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  2. 24 Jun 2026 — Pre-order announcement: Standard $79.99, Ultimate $99.99; Vintage Vice City Pack for early buyers.
  3. 25 Jun 2026 — Pre-orders open; TheGamer runs the "locked doors" Standard critique.
  4. 18 Aug 2026 — Rockstar Support details physical code-in-box, digital Ultimate, and post-redeem upgrades.
  5. 12 Nov 2026 — Pre-load week for digital and redeemed boxed codes.
  6. 19 Nov 2026 — Launch. Both editions unlock together.
  7. ~20 Nov 2026 — Vintage pack / digital GTA+ early-buy window closes (store clocks differ by platform).

Confirmed
$79.99 / $99.99; Ultimate digital-only; physical Standard = code-in-box; upgrade after redeem; chapter-threaded bonuses; Vintage pack for both editions before ~Nov 20; digital GTA+ month on digital pre-orders.

Reported
TheGamer "locked doors" framing; outlets calling shops and the compound cut from the base world; chatter that the upgrade will land at exactly $20.

Unverified
Standalone upgrade price on storefronts; how locked shops look to Standard players; physical Ultimate box later.

What $79.99 Actually Buys

Standard is the game Rockstar is selling to the world on November 19: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, single-player Leonida, Lucia and Jason. Take-Two's pre-order language does not call Standard a demo or a truncated act list. It calls Ultimate an amplification — premium vehicles, weapons, apparel — for twenty dollars more.

That matters when a friend texts "do I need Ultimate to finish the story?" The honest desk answer is no. You need Standard (or Ultimate) and a console that can download the thing. Story completion is not the SKU fight.

Punchline: Standard is the license that boots the campaign. Everything else is garnish.

What the Extra $20 Unlocks

Official '95 Grotti Cheetah promotional still from Grand Theft Auto VI

Rockstar Support's editions article is the locker list, not a rumor board. Vehicles and watercraft: '95 Grotti Cheetah, '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and garage, Shitzu Squalo, plus Jason's safehouse vehicles. Ballistics: Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers and personalized finishes for the Girardi ES9 and Klose K17. Grooming and boutiques: Vice City Styles, Sara's Unisex Salon, Stock 305 Clothing Store, Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor, Goodtime Gear. Mod shops: Ganado Retro Build, Rideout Customs, One-Eyed Willie's. World enclaves: the PTT Youngin$ Compound and Classic Car Collection restoration work with Wyman.

None of that dumps into your inventory at the opening cutscene. Rockstar's editions page says the bonuses are threaded across the story and uncovered behind each chapter. You play, you clear chapters, the toys and shops show up on a schedule Rockstar controls.

Punchline: Ultimate is a chapter-gated loot calendar, not a day-one garage dump.

Digital-Only Ultimate and the Code-in-Box Standard

If you want cardboard on a shelf, you are buying Standard. Rockstar Support is blunt: the physical version contains a download code, no disc, and it shows up from November 12 so you can pre-load. Ultimate lives on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Rockstar's digital rails. There is no Ultimate steelbook on the official launch list.

That split is why the edition picker and boxed copy hubs refuse to pretend Ultimate is a Best Buy aisle product. Shelf buyers get Standard plus a string of characters. Digital buyers choose Standard or Ultimate at checkout.

Punchline: the box is a gift card with a map stub; Ultimate never leaves the storefront.

You Can Upgrade Later — Price TBD

Rockstar Support confirms Standard owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from PlayStation or Microsoft stores after the Standard code is redeemed. Physical buyers get the same door once their download code is live. You are not locked out forever if you cheap out on day one.

What Support has not printed is the standalone upgrade's exact dollar amount after launch. The pre-order delta is $20. Outlets and wiki pages often assume the upgrade mirrors that delta. We label that assumption Reported, not Confirmed. Do not budget a number Rockstar has not put on a product page.

Punchline: the upgrade path is real; the post-launch sticker is still blank ink.

Vintage Pack and GTA+ Sit Outside the Tier Fight

The Vintage Vice City Pack is the early-buyer bribe for both editions: '55 Vapid Stanier and garage, outfits and hairstyles, exclusive weapon pattern. Xbox Store language pegs eligibility to purchases prior to 19 November 2026 23:59:59; Rockstar Support and promo copy often say prior to November 20. Functionally that is midnight into the 20th, with platform clocks arguing about time zones. Either way, wait past launch week and you can lose the pack.

Digital pre-orders also tack on one month of GTA+. PlayStation's legal line says the offer ends around November 19, must be redeemed by 31 March 2027, and then auto-renews at the regular price until you cancel. Physical boxed codes are out of that promo. GTA+ is Online and library furniture, not a VI story cheat code.

Punchline: Vintage and GTA+ reward early digital checkout, not which edition you pick.

The "Locked Doors" Argument, Labeled Straight

TheGamer's June 25 piece argues the $80 game leaves players staring at shopfronts they cannot use — Sara's, Rideout, Electric Fang — and calls Ultimate the "Full Game" edition in protest. Later coverage from TheGamer and Player. One leans on the same nerve: paywalling map locations and the PTT Youngin$ Compound feels heavier than a classic special-edition car pack.

Rockstar's framing is the opposite: optional premium content, progression-gated so early chapters stay balanced, with a post-launch upgrade so the choice is not permanent. Both sides are arguing about the same Support list. Only one side has a Newswire. Label the editorial heat Reported. Do not turn a critic's metaphor into a confirmed boarded-up door until someone with a Standard license films the facade.

Punchline: "locked doors" is a press thesis, not a Support screenshot.

How to Decide Before November 19

Buy Standard if you want the campaign and you are price-sensitive. Add Ultimate now if you know you want the Cheetah, the compound, and the boutique crawl without a second cart later. Buy Standard physical only if you need a spine on a shelf and accept the code-in-box reality. Watch the Vintage cutoff on the calendar if the Stanier pack matters to you.

Useful desks on this site: editions, FAQ, pre-order safety. We will not invent a May collector's Ultimate box because a Reddit warehouse SKU said so.

Punchline: spend the twenty only if the locker list is the reason you open the wallet.

What We Still Don't Know

  • Exact standalone Ultimate Upgrade price after launch.
  • How Sara's, Rideout, Electric Fang, and the compound present to Standard players — locked door, dead facade, or interior without a clerk.
  • Whether Ultimate vehicles can ever be earned with in-game cash on a Standard license.
  • Whether chapter unlocks need online license checks or work fully offline after install.

November 19 is the official clock for both editions. Pre-load starts November 12. The Vintage / early GTA+ window dies around November 20 depending on which store clock you trust. Until Rockstar prints a different price or a physical Ultimate SKU, the desk math stays simple: $79.99 for the game, $99.99 for the game plus the chapter-threaded locker.

You're not losing the story: Standard is the full campaign, and the $20 Ultimate tier is vehicles, weapons, shops and that compound. Rockstar Support confirms Standard owners can buy the Ultimate Upgrade after redeeming, so waiting is fine. One catch, the standalone upgrade price isn't published yet, so we can't pin that number. Standard is the full game. Ultimate is toys. Same as buying the mansion DLC early. I will wait.
