GTA 6 cops hunt your clothes, car, and the couple

IGN's Rockstar North visit plus the official Extended Look spell out how Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos switch, date, and lose cops. X is already guessing meters, K-9s, and GTA V-style betrayals Rockstar has not shown.
Police in Grand Theft Auto 6 hunt a description, not a shrinking radar blob. IGN sat with Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson in Edinburgh for a 30-minute live session, then published 69 systems from that demo as Rockstar posted An Extended Look on the official VI site. The megathreads on X, including Russian-language "all facts" lists, are translations of that press session, not a fresh leak. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos can date, or skip it. The cops still remember the jacket. Launch is November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Switch, text, or skip the romance
As in GTA 5, you can switch between the two leads in the open world at any time. Switching can lock during some story beats. Playing one, you can go solo or summon the other by call or text to a job or just to hang out. In a car you can swap seats: the passenger shoots while the other drives, or sits and runs the radio. Stay out most of a day and you may get a message to lock the house, or a note that they are going to bed. Ignore those and the relationship takes a hit.
Two leads was not the first plan. Nelson told IGN the studio talked about following GTA 5's three characters with four, then stepped back to a couple so players would have enough time with each. In a separate IGN interview he split the backend in two: a system that tracks what sort of criminal you are, and a relationship system. They are separate. You manage the second by spending time together in the world, including pool, mini golf, kayaking, and robberies.
The story starts with both of them wanting a romance. Whether it happens is time spent together after missions, because the critical path may not give them enough of it. Ways to strengthen the bond: exploring Leonida, shopping, salons, exercising as a pair, and robberies together. No matter how tense it gets, they still cover each other in main missions. How close they are at certain points does change how the story plays. Romance does not grant combat or cash bonuses. It is a roleplay choice. Hold hands with the right trigger. Hold doors for each other. Lucia's ankle tag is how they meet, and denser backstories open if you actually spend the time.
I have to say it feels great — if you are into it as a concept. Don't bother with it if you aren't. Up to you.
Nelson also told IGN they remain partners in crime either way. GamesRadar repeats the same point: you cannot dump them. IGN posted the romance note on X the same day as the wanted explainer.
Safehouses, gyms, and a satellite map
They can share a safehouse and still run independent schedules so each feels alive when you are not looking. IGN compared the bases to Red Dead Redemption 2 camps more than classic GTA houses: other people can drop in, and one home they saw belonged to someone else. You can shorten or shave hair and beards there. New styles still need a salon or barber. Each character can keep several personal cars. Trunks work. Store a change of clothes and weapons for fights and getaways. Salons and clothing stores sit across the map, but each shop has exclusive items and signature cuts, which is why you bother visiting more than one.
Gym work increases muscle and strength. Overeating adds weight. Food also gives a substantial health boost. Do any of that solo or as a couple. Nelson called the map "very big" and did not give a size. Districts are styled to the culture of the people who live there. The pause-map is satellite imagery, not the old schematic blocks. Exploration is rewarded. Events and missions are not limited to map icons.
Unmarked jobs, Ryde Me, and the phone
Random encounters happen in the world. IGN's example: pills for a questionable lawyer sitting in a dumpster, in exchange for legal advice. Fast travel is a taxi app called Ryde Me. If another passenger is in the car, you can talk through the whole ride. Radio and TV ads are back, more of both than in prior games. IGN spotted depression drug Angstipan and The Prairie Sandwich at 30,000 calories.
Snapmatic returns as an Instagram parody. You cannot post your own photos, because they are a couple on the run and do not want a digital trail. You can lurk, follow accounts, and browse. The phone is an in-world object. The camera zooms to the hand instead of popping a HUD in the corner, closer to Red Dead's gun-cleaning close-up than to GTA 5's overlay. GamesRadar, working from the same HQ round of interviews, says you can cruise as Jason then swap to Lucia in the passenger seat and sit on working social feeds while the other drives.
Open-world activities IGN listed: pool, mini golf, kayaking, the zoo, scuba diving, parachute jumps, and the gym. At the zoo or in the wild you can study animals onto a checklist, another Red Dead lift. Dogs can be petted or scolded. NPCs vary more in body shape and height than in any prior Rockstar game, with animations retargeted to those bodies.
Interaction with a holstered gun uses an evolved Red Dead prompt set: greet and taunt as openers, defuse or provoke if someone is already aggressive. You can stand and listen to conversations. They notice eavesdropping and may confront you. Same if they think you have been following them. NPCs can start violence. Civilians in Vice City and around it also carry weapons. Ambient talk can trigger jobs. Jason or Lucia can spontaneously pitch a nearby activity or score and turn your route into something else if you agree. Focus highlights useful items and helps you clock police.
Six stars, hollow stars, and a Criminal Profile
Wanted does not start until a witness sees the crime or an alarm trips. Dispatched officers get specifics and respond to the scene. A hot area can stay marked after you leave, with police still searching until it cools. Six stars return after GTA 5's five. One star is meant to be easy to shed. Six is the old high-chaos getaway. At three stars and up in the city, tight streets and dense traffic make a car chase a bad bet unless you have something very fast. Alleys on foot are the intended out. Movement — running, jumping, climbing — was reworked for that. Eurogamer matches IGN on the description hunt. IGN also posted a wanted note on X.
Cops can learn what you look like and what you are wearing. Icons under the stars show which of those they have. Changing hair drops the appearance icon. A new hat or glasses is not enough for clothes: you need a full outfit, which is why a clean set in the trunk matters. Masks during the crime, then off for the escape, can keep a face description off the radio even if CCTV sees you.
They can also know the car, so dumping it and taking another cuts heat. If the report is a couple, you can split to divert them. Tell the other to flee and take the heat yourself. Once you are apart, a text comes when the coast is clear. Hollow outline stars mean they do not know what you look like. Leave the search zone quietly and you should be clear. If either is arrested, the Busted screen still fires and you respawn, even if the partner is still running.
Not every confrontation has to call the cops. Aim without firing and an NPC can flee. Some story missions still force a fight. Overall the design wants hit-and-run: in and out before the cars arrive. In a shootout you can incapacitate instead of killing: arm or leg to put someone down, or shoot the weapon out of their hand. Impressive kills get a slow-motion cinematic camera, again like Red Dead.
The Criminal Profile is GTA 6's cousin of Red Dead honor, without a clean good/bad bar. Repeated behavior changes how the world treats you in free roam and how the story may play. Extra violence and mayhem push it one way. Small citizen acts, such as throwing your own trash away, push it the other. Crimes on missions, required robberies, and forced aggression do not necessarily move the profile.
WAINK, fences, and money that gates missions
Rockstar wants money to matter more than in recent GTA games. Sometimes you have to raise a set amount before main missions continue. The main income: boosting and selling cars, holding up businesses, robbing stores, and bank jobs. Do a robbery solo or as a pair. Together it counts toward the relationship.
Greed versus speed is the heist choice. Explosives open a safe fast and damage the cash. Hunting the combination pays more and gives police time to arrive. They can even surround the building and wait. Many spots have a back door. Stolen goods go to fences, jewelry and cars on separate desks. A car fence can also hand you useful information, such as the code to a police impound with cars worth boosting.
Stealing a parked car is no longer triangle-and-go. Cars sit on a tier: more expensive means harder to crack. Scan first with the WAINK phone app. It shows value, the cost to register it as yours, whether it is locked or alarmed, and whether it has a tracker. Old cars take a slim jim. Prestige cars need a key cloner. Some tools only arrive later in the story, so early on certain parked cars are simply closed. Occupied cars still jack the old way. Fences pay less for damaged cars. Narrower streets and denser traffic make a clean delivery harder on purpose. Some cars have advanced trackers that alert police if you drive too slowly. Speed up or dump it.
IGN says Nelson's own playthrough — main story plus some optional goals with narrative ramifications — ran about 80 hours. That is not a 100% estimate.
Choices, the ankle tag, and satire that is supposed to age
The story includes small choices that accumulate and large ones that change the world immediately. It is built for repeat playthroughs. Directed plot beats still exist when they have to, but Rockstar tried to hook open-world actions to who Jason and Lucia are. Missions have more routes: a tower-block job with multiple escapes, a chase where you pick driving or shooting, a police pursuit with a suggested line and other ways out.
Lucia's ankle tag is a notable story piece and the reason they meet. Backstories are sometimes stated, sometimes only hinted. A stronger relationship can reveal more. The design rewards time in the world over mission-to-mission rushing. Rockstar says it blurred the line between open world and main missions. Satire still runs through the story and the map. IGN says it will not lean on specific political issues, memes, or slang that would date during a long development cycle.
What X is still guessing
Most of the posts on X today are the IGN list with different graphics. The extra claims are thinner, and they should stay labeled as such. InfamousRyan wrote that the pair have a relationship health meter that changes dialogue and unique cutscenes. IGN confirmed a relationship system you feed by spending time together. It did not describe a visible HUD meter. One reply expects GTA 5-style multiple endings: betrayal or a life together. Nelson said they remain partners in crime and you cannot dump them. He also said closeness changes how the story plays. That is not a named betrayal ending.
GTA VI NEWS added K-9 units and body cameras as leak talk. That is not in the HQ 69. Players are already asking whether six stars means military or NOOSE. IGN only called six-star heat the classic chaos getaway. It did not name tanks or a federal unit.
The GTA 6 Guy, posting as a GTA 6 news insider, lists CCTV, people you were spotted with, looks, and firearm discharge as ID methods. Masks versus cameras is in IGN. Gunshot ID is his add-on. He also posted that you can slim jim or smash a window, which lines up with Nelson on tools, and that a last-enemy slow-mo kill cam returns from Red Dead, which IGN also described.
Voyagers Revenge calls Jason an ex-military firearms specialist who can carry a rifle or shotgun in one hand like Max Payne 3. That is not in the 69-point demo notes. Kai Cenat's clip of the six-star HUD is the post X is passing around. That part is on screen in the Extended Look. Earlier leak chatter argued over whether CyberLeek could play Lucia at all. That debate is separate from the HQ list and does not add a system.
The honest gap: IGN's 69 points come from a hands-off studio demo plus a directed capture, not from a player-owned retail copy. Rockstar has not published a system-by-system Newswire for WAINK, Ryde Me, hollow stars, or the Criminal Profile. Those names are press-session reporting. If the Newswire or the retail build shows a relationship meter, K-9s, or tanks at six stars, those X posts were early. Until then they are guesses sitting on top of a real demo. Watch the Extended Look from rockstargames.com/VI. The game is still November 19, 2026.
