GTA 6 sprint sits on L3. The face button is free for 360 drive-bys

Preview reports on 10 September 2026 said Rockstar North moved default on-foot sprint in Grand Theft Auto VI to an L3 stick toggle. Twenty-five years of mashing X or A is the thing they retired. You can hold speed across Vice City without hammering a face button. The right thumb is free to move the camera in a five-star chase, check a corner, and keep eyes on a cruiser.

The gun can come out the window

Eurogamer says sprint on L3 let Rockstar North map the vehicle emergency brake to the freed face button. Old games made you hold the handbrake and give up the crosshair. VI borrows Red Dead Redemption 2's horseback freefire, so a driver can aim a sidearm in a full 360 out the side glass while the car is turning. Our GTA 6 leak tracker logged earlier test clips of protagonists firing backward through rear windshields. That tape is unofficial. If it holds, a solo driver can shoot tires without pinning the camera forward.

DualSense drift is a hardware bill

Eurogamer also logged player @vijayyyyy_7 in the comments, plus the hardware worry. People staring at an estimated 100-hour campaign do not want a campaign of L3 clicks eating the $85 DualSense potentiometers. Franchise veterans miss tap-to-sprint as a walk, jog, and sprint rhythm, a tactile cadence from the 3D era. That cadence is real. It also forced a claw grip if you wanted camera and sprint together. L3 is a toggle. It is not analog poetry. It is a thumb that can aim.

Eurogamer carried the line: "GTA 6 killing tap-to-sprint after 25 years is correct and I don't care if it feels 'wrong.'" And: "We are not tapping X across Vice City in 2026. If that ruins your muscle memory, the muscle memory was the problem."

Gym bulk is on the preview sheet

Stick sprint sits next to a body sim. Previews say gym work, diet, and sleep change muscle mass and weight, a San Andreas idea. Weights add upper-body bulk and sprint stamina. Overeating slows a foot chase. When the question was realistic friction versus convenience, studio co-head Rob Nelson told Beebom that world simulation has to serve the action, not block it.
