GTA 6 maps sprint to L3 so face buttons can drift and free-aim

Creator previews at Rockstar North put default sprint on an L3 stick click. Face buttons are free for drift and 360-degree drive-bys. Stick-drift complaints are already on the tape.
Creator preview Studio playtests confirm default L3 sprint
Hands-on creator previews at Rockstar North on 1 September confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI maps default on-foot sprint to a single L3 stick click. Traversal across Leonida answers the stick immediately, not with Arthur Morgan's heavy turning inertia from Red Dead Redemption 2. VICE dates that as the end of 25 years of face-button tapping in one build.
From GTA III through GTA V, sprinting while tracking police forced a claw grip so you could still rotate the camera. L3 keeps both thumbs on the sticks. You can pan and still see flanking VCPD cruisers on a high-heat run.
Handbrake and drift move to A and X
Video from MikeShowSha is the mechanical payoff. Sprint off the face buttons lets Rockstar North put vehicle handbrake and drift on A and X. The right stick stays free in a turn.
GTA V kept drive-by fire on narrow lateral arcs unless you contorted a finger. MikeShowSha's preview read is that GTA VI lets you drift a Port Gellhorn corner and swivel 360 degrees to shoot. Our GTA 6 leak tracker has logged the same analog push. Kotaku made the same argument when the WAINK scanner replaced one-button carjacking. Rockstar felt older inputs

Stick-drift anxiety versus mash-to-sprint
Franchise purists already hate it. VICE quotes players who liked mashing as body armor cracked under SWAT fire. A frantic tap felt like exertion. A held stick click does not.
Hardware is the other complaint. GTA 6 Updates tracked millions of impressions on threads about controller longevity. The fear is that a long campaign of L3 clicks grinds potentiometers and speeds stick drift on a stock DualSense or Xbox pad. Face buttons survive that job. Analog modules do not.
No classic tap-to-sprint toggle on the sheet
GTA V shipped alternate profiles such as Standard FPS. Kotaku and VICE both say Rockstar North has not announced a classic tap-to-sprint option in accessibility. MikeShowSha's preview is the catch: putting sprint back on a face button steals the handbrake. Occupy A or X and the 360-degree drive-by is the thing you give up.
Retail accessibility copy still has to land on the Newswire. Until it does, the default is L3. The mash is gone unless Rockstar prints a remap that keeps drift intact. VICE has players already asking for that remap. The tape does not show it.
