Former Rockstar staff put GTA 6 at 80 to 90 percent complete

Former developers put GTA 6 at 80 to 90 percent complete. Trailer polish is the warning. Union anti-crunch pressure is the constraint on the road to 19 November 2026.

Grand Theft Auto VI is in feature freeze at roughly 80 to 90 percent complete, if you believe former staff talking to the trades. New systems are not the job. Bug triage and engine stability are. Mission scripts and map layouts are treated as locked. The remaining work is keeping Vice City from falling over when the simulation piles on.

Trailer cameras versus the raw map

Promotional trailers sell peak fidelity. Play strains hardware from angles nobody choreographed. A former Rockstar environmental artist said marketing reels ride madly polished camera paths that hide rougher, unoptimized open-world zones in live production builds. Lighting, reflections, and pedestrian density can look finished for a five-second sweep across Ocean Beach. An unscripted highway chase across Leonida still has to stream level of detail in real time against console memory.

That gap showed up when early debug builds leaked. Gray-box geometry. Placeholder assets. Rockstar called the leak heartbreaking and said development is nearly there. It apologized for the wait and asked people to judge official gameplay, not mid-cycle test builds. Coverage of that response is the public record. The gray boxes were the private one.

The 80 to 90 percent lock

A former developer told Dexerto the game is content-complete. Jason and Lucia's core mechanics, district layouts, and mission logic are treated as final. Locking features now is how you stop multi-car pileups, robbery cascades, and police ramps from breaking physics and streaming. New toys at this stage would be vanity. Stability is the product.

Polish without a midnight crunch

The last 10 to 20 percent is optimization under tighter labor rules. Trade union reports cited by Dexerto describe advocacy against mandatory late-stage crunch. Rockstar's official site still aims at 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That window is for hitching, vehicle handling, and crowd balance. It is not for inventing a new wanted layer.

Uncurated corners of Leonida will not automatically match a trailer sweep. The Extended Look is already live, about 27 minutes on YouTube after a Netflix-first window on 27 August. That uncut reel is the better hardware test than a studio-wide overtime myth.
