GTA 6 vs GTA 5 Is a Motion Test, Not a Screenshot Contest

GTA 6 vs GTA 5 Is a Motion Test, Not a Screenshot Contest

Rockstar's August 27 Extended Look and ~30 new Vice City stills reignited a GTA 6 vs GTA 5 graphics debate. Ned Luke, who played Michael in GTA 5, says the leap lives in human walks and skin detail that compression erases.

Rockstar aired Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27, 2026, about 27 minutes of PlayStation 5 footage, and followed it August 31 to September 1 with roughly 30 new official screenshots of Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos and Vice City, catalogued in gallery roundups and mirrored in a second gallery both credited to Rockstar. Within hours those frames sat next to Unreal Engine 5 demos and GTA 5 Enhanced on X, a comparison that set the verdict: it just looks like GTA 5. Keep our leak tracker open for what is official versus reposted.

Vice City screenshots meet 27 minutes of PS5 motion

The official VI site anchors GTA 6 launching November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in Leonida with Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, but the Extended Look gave a single take to scrub and the late-August stills gave thumbnails to crop. As one artwork archive notes, the collection hit 99 with 29 added August 31.

On X, compressed crops flattened Rockstar's filmic grade where Unreal 5 looked "more realistic" and GTA 6's neon and skin looked muted. No spec sheet or capture notes came with the stills. A JPEG crushes the channels RAGE grades for television — skin subsurface, hair strands, night-light bounce.

Ned Luke: actual human walks versus mechanical GTA 5 rig

Ned Luke, who played Michael in GTA 5, answered the comparison in a Partychat / House of Highlights video interview August 30 to 31, as reported by IGN and Dexerto.

"This looks nothing like Grand Theft Auto 5. I think they're out of their minds."

He doubled down on Jason:

"I'll tell you one thing: I never looked that good"

His note was not face pixels but gait. "Watch the way the people move. The walks are actual human walks," he said, against GTA 5's rig where his own performance became what he called a mechanical thing — bent legs, a snap into stride that reads for hundreds of hours on foot. He said the graphics beat Red Dead Redemption 2 and framed the jump like GTA 4 to GTA 5: "Our graphics blew GTA 4 away. They weren't even close." Luke has no role in GTA 6; his point lands because he lived inside the previous rig.

Systems motion shows that stills erase

Preview attendees point to systems, not screenshots: an NPC who dresses for the gym outside, hair that holds shape when a character turns, skin that holds under noon sun, dense Vice City crowds that keep variety at distance, water that holds motion instead of a single reflection, and night lighting that blooms across glass.

Compression erases that. A still compares a frozen cheek to a demo cheek; motion shows how a sidewalk reacts, how traffic weight shifts, how a crowd parts around Jason and Lucia.

Thirteen-year gap, two delays and Leonida scrutiny

Thirteen years between mainline entries, two delays and a long leak season built a "show me the leap" mood where every drop must prove distance on demand. That rewards a single before-after over the accumulation of movement, dressing logic and world sim across about 27 minutes of footage and roughly 99 screenshots.

No published RAGE changelog versus Unreal Engine 5, no resolution or frame-rate spec for the September 1 batch, and no confirmation the stills are raw capture versus marketing grade settles it.

What is documented is narrower: Rockstar showed Vice City in motion August 27, expanded the still catalog four days later, X flattened both into a side-by-side, and the actor who walked Los Santos says watch the walk.

Stills never sold V either. You had to watch the walk cycles. Ned Luke is right about that mechanical snap in 5. Back in SA the trailers lied with freeze frames too.

Luke saying the walks beat RDR2 is a big claim and I kinda buy it. Stills never showed that weight either.

Ned Luke said motion. Freeze-frames are the wrong test. Hosts already know that.
