Rockstar North previews put fuel, Heat, and a Criminal Profile on GTA 6

Creators who sat inside Rockstar North describe GTA 6 with draining fuel, police off the minimap, and tiered car theft. Stolen cash dies with you if you never reach an ATM.

Creator preview Hands-on reports from Rockstar North show simulation layers over classic sandbox chaos.

Hands-on previews from creators like TGG and Rubius, after hours inside Rockstar North, describe a crime sandbox built on physical friction. Fuel tanks drain on the highway. Stolen cash dies with you before an ATM. Police hunt getaway cars without minimap radar cones. It is not an unplayable survival checklist. It does force you to count the next move.

Vehicle fuel consumption and sleep-state health recovery

In Grand Theft Auto V, pinning a supercar across San Andreas did not require a dashboard. In GTA VI, vehicles consume fuel over distance. Gas stations become pit stops for refueling and body repairs. Consumption is tuned slowly so errands do not turn into busywork. Run empty in a pursuit and you are on foot.

Sleep works the same way. Jason and Lucia use beds in safehouses or motels to stay well-rested, and that state governs health regeneration. Dynamic body conditioning also returns. Junk food increases weight. Gym workouts and protein shakes add visible muscle. After his session, Rubius said Jason looked thicker and Lucia fuller than in the reveal trailers. Diet and workouts change the models on the tape.

Vehicle theft with slim jims and the Waink app

Locked cars are no longer an instant door pull. Theft needs tiered tools. Slim jims for older doors. Transponder cloners for modern sedans. Electronic bypasses for high-end exotics. Sidewalk scans through the Waink smartphone app detect alarms and integrated GPS before anyone smashes glass. Municipal and police vehicles carry active trackers that alert dispatch unless you dump them fast.

Gunfights close the easy out too. Snap auto-aim is off by default. Rockstar puts Focus in its place, a slow-motion precision mode that highlights mechanical weak points such as radiator blocks, tire walls, and exposed fuel lines. A getaway car is prep, not a sidewalk impulse.

Minimap police radar is gone. Heat tracks the clothes

Pursuits drop omniscient radar blips. Vice City police units no longer appear on the minimap. You track sirens by line of sight and directional audio. An underlying Heat layer catalogs evidence in real time. CCTV. Facial identification. Clothing colors. Weapon choices. Getaway vehicle models.

Previewers say bystanders physically pull out phones and report crimes to dispatch. Unconfirmed witness reports produce hollow wanted stars, so you can drive past patrols if you do not match the radio call. Botched robberies trigger localized cordons, and previewers say six-star wanted levels can push the perimeter map-wide. In his hands-on session, Rubius hit an unscripted traffic jam caused by crashed robbers, killed them for their duffel bags, and immediately triggered a manhunt when onlookers recognized Lucia's clothes. That is the system firing in a jam, not a mission beat.

Criminal Profile states and a mute toggle for the alerts

Loot and reputation stick. Stolen duffel cash cannot be laundered through phone menus. You fence it in the world and walk it to an ATM. Cash on hand is gone on death. Protagonists also grow distinct Criminal Profiles that cycle through Professional, Violent, Psycho, and an irreversible cracked state where excessive bloodshed harms robbery cooperation and cuts payouts. Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson framed the balance as tactical restraint:

"Sometimes it’s about cutting your losses."

Nelson also said Criminal Profile notifications can be muted in settings, which lets sandbox traditionalists ignore the behavioral warnings. That toggle is the studio answering community heist debates about heavy roleplay friction. Mute the alerts if you want. You still have a fuel gauge and a Waink scan. The next official beat is a mechanics breakdown on Rockstar Games that says how tightly those layers bind to the campaign.

Fuel on the highway. Heat instead of radar cones. Closer to SA wanted levels than V arcade chasing.
