The June click chart still standing in for a GTA 6 order book

On September 24, 2026, Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball answered Tom Warren in public. Ball said Microsoft is very happy with Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders, that the title is breaking records for Xbox, and that he expects more records through the fall. Internal analysis, he said, shows Xbox's share of preorders matching its share of the console market. IGN reported the reply the same day, and reported that The Verge's Tom Warren said PS5 dominance of GTA 6 pre-orders was ringing yet more alarm bells about Xbox as a platform. The 8-to-1 figure people are still texting is a June click chart, not an order book.

A buyer weighing GTA 6 pre-orders PS5 vs Xbox has an unpublished book in front of them. Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are open for the November 19, 2026 launch. One box, order it. Two boxes, and the unit split stays inside Microsoft. GTA V pre-orders left the same hole. Ads fought. The book stayed shut.

Matthew Ball's September 24 reply

IGN described the claim Ball answered as GTA 6 pre-orders heavily skewed toward PlayStation 5, inside a piece on Xbox layoffs and a studios reorganization. Ball's answer was the share.

Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of preorders to be matching our share of the console market.

Answering a platform-alarm story makes him an interested speaker. The reply is internal analysis. On Microsoft's account, a PlayStation-led cart can sit beside a record Xbox book. The sentence defends the slice. The size of the pie stays off the page.

The June 27 IGN Finds chart

Eurogamer reported that on June 27, 2026, through IGN Finds and its commerce affiliate linking program, PlayStation was outperforming Xbox on GTA 6 by 8-to-1. Microsoft told Windows Central:

This doesn't represent pre-order data. We've had record orders. People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links.

The September 24 IGN story leaves both the 8-to-1 and the 6-to-1 off the page. IGN wrote that analysts have suggested PS5 is outselling Xbox Series by at least 2-to-1, and that if the ratio holds there are likely about twice as many GTA 6 pre-orders on PS5. Eight times and two times are different claims.

Plays best on PlayStation 5

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI page lists November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, pre-order available, and prints "Plays Best On PlayStation 5." Jason and Lucia still land in Vice City and Leonida on either box. The buy page leaves the split unpublished.

IGN reports more than 95 million PS5 units sold as of June 30, and that Microsoft has not announced an Xbox Series X and S sales number in years. Ball's share has no public Microsoft denominator. The reply never defines that share as installed base, active users, or sell-through.

IGN also reported Sony pushing PS5-focused gameplay coverage, a custom GTA 6 UI, and DualSense speaker and haptics in Sony blog posts. If those controller features ship only on PS5, the gap is in the hands. The plays-best line can pull carts past install base. It can also sit there as marketing until a player can test the haptics. Heavily skewed and matches our share can describe the same unpublished book.

Viewers on a YouTube pre-order video made the install-base case too. More PlayStation owners, more PlayStation pre-orders, same attach rate. Xbox user totals in that thread are estimates, short of a Microsoft figure. Pre-orders stay open on both boxes until November 19, 2026. The check on Rockstar's page is the console in the room and the line that the game plays best on PlayStation 5. Is a smaller Xbox pile that still matches Xbox's hardware share a platform problem, or just the install base?
