PS5 vs Xbox for GTA 6: The Pre-Order Fight and What Xbox Players Miss Out On

Sony's deal buys PS5 the ads and the controllers, not a better game. The pre-order split is an estimate, and nobody on Xbox loses GTA 6.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day, at the same $79.99 price. On September 24, The Verge reported that pre-orders skew heavily toward PS5, and Xbox's chief strategy officer answered on X that afternoon: "Not true."
Both consoles get the same game. They just don't get the same commercials.
Claim. Sony's marketing deal gets PS5 the ads, the "plays best on PS5" line and two limited controllers, not a better game. The pre-order split everyone quotes is a third-party estimate, and nobody loses GTA 6.
Evidence. Official: PlayStation Blog, September 3: GTA VI "plays best on PS5," plus two Limited Edition DualSense pads at $84.99. Official: same date and price on both platforms. Estimate: Sensor Tower's tracker shows about 5.65 million pre-orders, 77% on PS5. Official: Xbox's Matthew Ball says its share of pre-orders is "matching our share of the console market."
Verdict. Official: same game, same day; PS5 gets marketing extras. Estimate: the pre-order numbers. Unverified: any PS5-only in-game content and any per-console performance modes.

- September 24, 2026 — The Verge: pre-orders "heavily skewed" to PS5. Ball, 3:51 p.m. ET: "breaking records for XBOX."
- November 19, 2026 — Same game, same day, both consoles.

The Verge vs Matthew Ball, Explained
In a report on Xbox layoffs and a studio reorganization, The Verge's Tom Warren wrote that GTA 6's pre-order split was "ringing yet more alarm bells" about Xbox as a platform, citing Xbox sources who said orders were heavily skewed toward PS5 (Reported, via IGN).
Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball replied on X at 3:51 p.m. ET (Official): "Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of pre-orders to be matching our share of the console market." He answered another post relaying the headline with two words: "Not true." Four minutes later Warren asked back: "what's your share of the console market?"
As VICE pointed out, Ball's reply doesn't dispute that PlayStation has the bigger share. His point is that Xbox's slice matches its hardware slice.
Both men can be right. More PS5 owners means more PS5 pre-orders.
Sensor Tower's 5.65 Million Is an Estimate
The numbers in every headline come from Sensor Tower's public GTA VI sales tracker. As of about September 22, it estimated 4.35 million PS5 pre-orders and 1.3 million on Xbox, roughly 5.65 million total and a 77/23 split, worth about $426 million and $128 million (Estimate, via GameSpot).
That is a model, not a sales report. Sensor Tower says its estimates are built from aggregated data on more than four million public player profiles (Reported). VICE put it bluntly: "Microsoft, Sony, and Rockstar have not released official Grand Theft Auto VI pre-order numbers," so "take them with a grain of salt."
Now compare hardware. Industry estimates put PS5 at about 91 million consoles sold by early 2026 and Xbox Series X|S at about 34 million, a 73/27 split (Estimate, via shattered.io). Circana put the US split closer to 60/40 at the end of 2024 (Estimate). If you trust both sets of estimates, Xbox is a few points under its global hardware share. That's a gap, not a collapse.
A tracker's guess against a platform holder's claim is not a scoreboard.
What Sony's Marketing Deal Actually Buys
Sony's deal is marketing, and it looks like marketing. The PlayStation Blog says GTA VI "plays best on PS5" and promises the DualSense's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will "respond to the action" (Official). It announced two Limited Edition DualSense controllers, White and Black, at $84.99 each, launching November 19. US pre-orders opened September 10 at 10:00 a.m. ET on PlayStation Direct. Our DualSense page tracks stock, and our guide to what "plays best" means covers the haptics.
What the deal hasn't bought, as far as anyone has announced: a PS5 console bundle (IGN called it "slightly unlikely"), PS5-only missions, or a better-looking version of the game (Unverified either way; nothing announced).
So far, "plays best" is about the controller in your hands, not the game on your screen.
Sony and Rockstar Have Done This Before
At E3 2013, Sony announced an exclusive GTA V bundle with a PS3 and a $179 branded Pulse Elite headset (Reported, via iGTA5). For Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, Rockstar's own special-edition copy promised "select content first on PlayStation 4," Sony announced four items that reached PS4 30 days before Xbox One, stores carried "best enjoyed on PS4" displays, and Sony sold PS4 bundles (Reported, via RDR2.org).
In both cases the Xbox version launched the same day, with the same story. The deals bought bundles, branding and early extras.
The RDR2 precedent is the one to watch: that deal also covered timed online content. If GTA 6 multiplayer arrives later, that's where an early-on-PS5 perk would most likely show up. Nothing like that has been announced (Unverified).
What Xbox Players Miss Out On
The honest list is short.
- The limited controllers. They're PS5 hardware. Xbox has no GTA pad of its own.
- DualSense-specific feel. Haptics, adaptive triggers and the controller speaker are PlayStation features (Official, Sony marketing).
- The ads. Trailers and store displays will carry PlayStation logos.
What Xbox players don't miss: the game, the date, the price, Ultimate's content, the Vintage Vice City Pack or the free GTA+ month, which the Xbox Store lists too (Official). Xbox buyers are even slightly keener on Ultimate: Sensor Tower estimated 90% of Xbox pre-orders were Ultimate, against 88.5% on PS5 (Estimate).
If your friends are on Xbox, the console picker still says the same thing: follow the party.
Xbox Series S Gets the Same Game, With Unknown Settings
Series S has been the nervous question since 2024. In November of that year, Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick said the company would "find a way" to support platforms with different levels of tech. "Our labels are really good at that," he said. "I'm not really worried" (Official, via Eurogamer).
The only performance detail since came secondhand. A creator who watched a Rockstar North demo in August said it ran at 30fps. He says Rockstar North's head of development told him the game runs at 30fps for now and that he'd have to "consult the technical team" about 60fps (Reported, via Tom's Hardware). Rockstar hasn't published resolution or frame-rate modes for any console, PS5 Pro included.
Until Rockstar prints a spec sheet, nobody can tell you Series S is the worst place to play. They can only guess.
No Game Pass or PS Plus on Day One
Don't wait for a subscription. Take-Two has said for years that big new releases don't go into subscriptions on day one. Zelnick, in 2022: "That doesn't make any sense to us, because economically speaking, we don't think consumers are prepared to pay for that" (Official, via TweakTown). Neither Microsoft nor Sony has announced GTA 6 for Game Pass or the PS Plus catalog.
The flip side is good news: the US PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as "Offline play only," with no PS Plus requirement, because there is no online mode at launch. More on Game Pass and PS Plus.
On both consoles, the only way to play on November 19 is to buy it.
What We Still Don't Know
- Real pre-order numbers from Take-Two, Sony or Microsoft. Nobody has published one.
- Whether the Sony deal includes any timed in-game content, now or when multiplayer arrives.
- Resolution and frame-rate modes for PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S.
- A PC date. Still none; see why GTA 6 is console-first.
The official clock is the same on both boxes: pre-load November 12, unlock November 19 at 12:00 a.m. ET per US store listings. Buy where your friends play.
