Rob Nelson Stratifies the GTA 6 Car Theft System Before You Touch the Door

Rob Nelson told IGN on 27 August 2026 that GTA 6 vehicle theft now has layers, so older cars still open fast and higher-end doors need tools. WAINK shows security, value, and registration cost; some trackers can ping police below a speed; six-star memory of the car is still GTABase's 27 August 2026 guide.

IGN's 27 August 2026 report says the GTA 6 car theft system no longer opens every door on one button, so the car you want can sit behind a tool you have not bought yet. Triangle is not the plan.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, is the voice on that change. The six-star cop who remembers your face, clothes, and car still lives in GTABase's 27 August 2026 guide, not on Rockstar's VI page or the Newswire.

The Door That Used to Open on Triangle

Nelson put this on the record with IGN.

We have put some layers of stratification into the vehicles. Previously, you could just press triangle to automatically hotwire and steal any vehicle that you wanted and take off. We felt like that left a lot of potential gameplay on the table, in terms of progression and decision-making for players.

That triangle loop is the one players already run. IGN says that simplicity will not go away completely. Older, less desirable vehicles remain open to a swift entry, such as a slim jim in the window gap, while higher-end cars add security layers. A curb beater is still a getaway when the car you want is locked.

What WAINK Tells You Before You Jack It

Hold the device up in range and the scanner IGN says is really called WAINK shows the car's security system and value, plus the cost to register that car as your own. IGN does not know the tier count or what WAINK stands for, and it states the name is real. Some cars are locked digitally and need a digital key cloning device you have to buy. Some tools unlock only after a story point. Early on, the car you want may be a car you cannot open. Walk past it, pay for the tool, or wait for the story unlock.

Jason and Lucia can each own multiple personal vehicles if you have cash and garage space, so WAINK is also a keep-or-don't choice. The registration cost competes with the cloner and with fencing that same car later.

Slow Down and the Tracker Talks

A stolen car may carry a tracker, and IGN says some advanced versions reveal your location to law enforcement if you drive below a certain speed. No speed number is given. Staying fast can matter as much as breaking line of sight, because a turn, a store, or a clothing stop is where a chase usually breathes. If that ping is real, locked cars are a highway problem and slim-jim beaters are the city car until the cloning tool unlocks.

Players can visit a fence and sell any stolen vehicle, which IGN likens to Red Dead Redemption 2. Tracker removal before that sale is IGN's theory.

If the Cops Remember the Car You Just Stole

GTABase's guide says GTA 6 brings back a six-star wanted level, last seen in that guide's telling in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and that exact requirements have not been revealed. In that model police can use appearance, clothing, the vehicle, CCTV footage, and a companion, shown as red icons under the stars, while a hollow star means a response without an identifying description. The guide says hair and clothes wipe separately, that splitting the pair can cut tracking, and that interactions are unexplained and may change.

The harder door is the same object the guide says police can keep as a description, so dumping it cuts the vehicle from that description and loses the car you paid to enter. If that model holds, a haircut and a split still do not reveal which star you bought, and the hair change has to land on Jason and Lucia, the pair Rockstar's VI page names for the conspiracy across Leonida.

Steal the beater until the cloner unlocks, or take the luxury car and do not ease off. The phone check is the job now, and the tracker is the tax on winning it.
