What Happens to GTA Online When GTA 6 Arrives?

GTA V Online keeps running, and GTA 6 launches on November 19 with no online mode. Everything pointing to 2027 multiplayer is a signal, not an announcement.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 as a single-player game, and Take-Two says it will keep supporting GTA Online, the multiplayer world inside GTA V. Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6, and there is no date for one.

If your garage lives in Los Santos, it isn't going anywhere yet.

Claim. GTA V's Online keeps running after November 19. GTA 6 launches with no online mode, and the talk of 2027 multiplayer rests on signals, not an announcement.

Evidence. Official: Zelnick, September 17: GTA VI is "a single-player title" and "we will continue to support GTA V Online." Official: the Xbox Store tags the game Single player, and the US PlayStation Store lists "Offline play only." Reported: Twitch's CEO told Bloomberg multiplayer comes "next year." Reported: a Rockstar tribunal statement mentions "an online 32 player format."

Verdict. Official: GTA Online continues and GTA 6 launches offline. Reported: 2027 and 32 players. Unverified: any date, price, player count or carry-over for GTA 6 multiplayer.

  1. September 17, 2013 — GTA V launches as a single-player game.
  2. October 1, 2013 — GTA Online follows two weeks later, a gap Rockstar announced ahead of time.
  3. October 26 to November 27, 2018 — Red Dead Redemption 2 launches, then Red Dead Online opens as a beta a month later.
  4. July 2022 — Rockstar scales back Red Dead Online to move staff onto the next GTA.
  5. June 24, 2026 — GTA 6 pre-orders: "a single-player experience," plus a free month of GTA+ for GTA V Online.
  6. September 2026 — Tribunal filings describe "an online 32 player format." Zelnick confirms V Online continues. Twitch's CEO says multiplayer lands "next year."
  7. November 19, 2026 — GTA 6 launches offline. GTA Online stays up.

GTA Online Isn't Shutting Down

At Take-Two's annual shareholder meeting on September 17, Strauss Zelnick was asked about GTA Online. His answer, as transcribed by GTAVice (Official): "Just as a reminder, we have announced that we will be launching GTA VI on November 19th. It's a single-player title and it's being launched on Xbox and PS5. If the question is with regard to GTA V Online, that continues to be a robust business for us, and we will continue to support GTA V Online."

That's the plainest thing Take-Two has said about Online all year. No sunset date, no wind-down. Rockstar was still shipping updates this summer, and Take-Two's Q1 release named the GTA Online Kortz Center Heist summer update in its results (Official). Our Online hub tracks what is and isn't announced.

On November 19 the only persistent GTA world you can rob, race and grind in will still be the one from 2013.

Why Take-Two Keeps GTA V Online Running

Because it pays. In the quarter ending June 30, 2026, Take-Two said "recurrent consumer spending" made up 84% of its GAAP net revenue (Official). The company defines that as money from "virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases and in-game advertising." That figure covers the whole company, including NBA 2K and mobile games, so it isn't a GTA Online number. But Shark Cards are exactly the virtual currency it describes.

Then there's GTA+, Rockstar's GTA Online membership, which costs $7.99 a month on the US PlayStation Store (Official). Every digital GTA 6 pre-order includes a free month of it. Take-Two called GTA+ "the best way to get the most out of the ever-evolving world of GTA Online." Read that twice: the new game's pre-order bonus is a subscription to the old game. Our GTA+ page has the redeem dates and the auto-renew warning.

Zelnick has also said Take-Two keeps old online games alive while players stay. IGN, in June, quoted him pointing to NBA 2K Online titles that stayed live in China after their sequels: "we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them" (Reported).

Shutting down a service that still sells a monthly membership is not a thing publishers do for fun.

GTA 6 Has No Online Mode on November 19

Every official line points the same way. Take-Two's June 24 pre-order announcement said GTA VI "features a single-player experience" (Official). The Xbox Store tags it Single player. The US PlayStation Store listing reads "Offline play only" and "1 players," with no PS Plus requirement. Zelnick repeated "single-player title" in September and said Take-Two anticipates "no recurring spending" at launch.

What those lines don't say matters just as much. Rockstar hasn't said an online mode will never exist. It hasn't said when one would ship, whether it would be free, paid or part of GTA+, or whether it would replace GTA Online or sit beside it. For now the store listings name no online subscription requirement, because there's nothing online to play.

Single-player on day one is a fact. "Single-player forever" is not.

Rockstar Has Always Launched Online Second

This isn't new. GTA V came out on September 17, 2013, and GTA Online switched on two weeks later, on October 1, with 30-player sessions, and Rockstar told players about that gap before launch (Reported). Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived on October 26, 2018, and Red Dead Online opened as a beta on November 27, first for special edition owners, then for everyone (Reported, via Wikipedia).

The difference this time is the size of the gap and the silence around it. For GTA V, the two-week wait was printed in advance. For GTA 6, nobody official has printed any wait at all.

There's also a warning in the Red Dead story. In July 2022 Rockstar told players it had been "steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series," and it stopped major Red Dead Online updates (Official, via Game Developer). Red Dead Online stayed online. It just stopped getting big updates.

That is the version of "supported" GTA Online players should keep an eye on.

The 2027 Signals: A Twitch CEO and a Tribunal

The only date-shaped claim came from outside Rockstar. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told Bloomberg (Reported, via PC Gamer): "We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators. You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer." Twitch works with Rockstar on creator programs, so he may know something. He may also be forecasting his own audience. Our read of that quote is in Same day, two meanings of Online.

The second signal is legal paperwork. Rockstar is defending the October 2025 dismissal of 31 UK staff at an employment tribunal. A statement Rockstar submitted describes staff discussing "an online 32 player format" on a private Discord and treats game features as closely guarded secrets (Reported, via Hypebeast). Earlier, in January, a tribunal ruling quoted one fired developer about a test: "that was 32 players, not sure how that was difficult" (Reported, via TechRadar). Neither document says 32 is the launch cap. More in Glasgow filings describe a 32-player session and what the tribunal filing actually said.

A third, quieter clue: Rockstar's updated Mod Guidelines this September say multiplayer mods must run through its official licensed Creator Platform (Official, Rockstar). That's policy for all its games, not a GTA 6 Online date.

Three signals point at 2027. None of them is a Newswire post.

Your GTA Online Money and Cars Won't Carry Over, as Far as Anyone Knows

Any carry-over is Unverified: Rockstar hasn't said a word about moving GTA Online characters, GTA$, properties, cars or rank into GTA 6. Guides that track this, like Timesaver, note that every earlier Rockstar online mode started from a clean slate (Reported). New multiplayer, if it comes, will probably mean a new character and an empty bank.

So the practical advice is dull and useful. Don't grind GTA Online now to "save up" for Leonida. Spend GTA$ on what you enjoy in Los Santos, and if you take the free GTA+ month, set a reminder before it renews at $7.99.

Hoarding GTA$ for a transfer nobody announced is how you end up with a very rich character in a game you stopped playing.

What We Still Don't Know

  • When GTA 6 multiplayer launches, if it does. 2027 is a Twitch CEO's line, not Rockstar's.
  • Whether it will be free with GTA 6, a paid add-on, or tied to GTA+.
  • How many players a session holds. 32 comes from tribunal filings, not a spec sheet.
  • Whether GTA V Online keeps getting big updates after GTA 6 multiplayer arrives, or goes the way of Red Dead Online.
  • Whether any GTA Online progress, cosmetics or bonuses carry forward.

The official clock is simple. GTA 6 unlocks November 19 at 12:00 a.m. ET per US store listings, offline. GTA Online keeps running the same night.
