GTA 6 Police AI: Glasses and a Hat Still Leave the Outfit

IGN's August 27, 2026 hands-off at Rockstar's Edinburgh HQ put six wanted stars back on the HUD and a heat file under them, so the GTA 6 getaway has to break that file while the sirens are still up. Police keep the clothes.

Six Stars Sit on a Heat File

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told IGN the demo was running a heat system. Under the stars, IGN saw three red icons: a person silhouette for a physical description, a clothes hanger for the outfit, and a camera for CCTV. IGN called the six-star HUD the first full return since 2009's Chinatown Wars, after GTA 5 used five, and said the criteria for each star were not shown.

[The police] know what I look like and what I'm wearing. [If I find] a pair of glasses - I'll put on this and this baseball hat. But they still know what I'm wearing, so I would need to go to a clothing store or call my personal vehicle

GTA 5 cooled a five-star once you were outside the search radius long enough. Nelson's GTA 6 police AI keeps appearance, clothes, vehicle, and couple status as a read you have to break. Rockstar's Trailer 2 Newswire prints Jason and Lucia relying on each other to survive a criminal conspiracy across Leonida, while the heat file is what he described in Edinburgh.

Glasses and a Hat Still Leave the Outfit

Glasses and a baseball hat do not clear the outfit. Nelson said a hair change still leaves the outfit known if you are standing in the open, so the fixes are a clothing store or a personal vehicle with outfit changes in the trunk.

GTA 5 did not clear stars by changing clothes. You lost them by breaking line of sight and waiting. A viewer on IGN's wanted-system video said they would commit the crime in underwear, so the hanger has no outfit left to track. Another viewer on that video said you have to think about consequences before the job.

Does Splitting Up Lower the Heat?

Nelson said the icons showed police knew what they were driving, so the demo response was to jump out. He said police knew they were a couple, and that splitting up would help lower police perception. Calling the personal vehicle fetches trunk outfits, jumping out drops the known car, and he kept those as separate moves.

Staying in the identified car keeps the hunt on that vehicle even if you think you have outrun the sirens. Staying together as Jason and Lucia leaves that couple read in place, which is what Nelson said splitting would lower. GTA 5 character switching never dropped a wanted level by walking two protagonists apart.

No Witness, No Call to Dispatch

On Nelson's account, the GTA 6 wanted system does not start because you committed the crime. Nelson said someone has to witness it, or an alarm has to be set off, before it is reported, and he called dispatch extremely specific in what it knows. A camera icon is CCTV footage on the heat file. IGN recalled that GTA 5 pedestrians could already call 911 on crimes police did not see.

IGN only asked whether Snapmatic or Lifeinvader photos could feed a profile. A March 23, 2025 Times of India piece framed NPC crime videos as a leak, and that filming claim is not in Nelson's quotes.

What Does a Sixth Star Send?

Six stars sat on the HUD in that demo, and IGN did not describe what a sixth star sends. Viewers on GTA 6's New Police AI say an RDR2 train robbery in the middle of nowhere still drew a posse within about 30 seconds, that masks did very little, and that once wanted it matched GTA 5.

Call the personal car for a clean shirt and you may put a known vehicle back under you. Jump out, split Jason from Lucia, and the hanger is still the clothes you walked in wearing.
