GTA 6’s Grassrivers vs the Real Everglades: Gators, Flamingos and the Python Rockstar Hasn’t Shown

GTA 6’s wetlands have a name: Grassrivers, one of the six Leonida regions on Rockstar’s official site. Trailer 1 shows an airboat cutting through it, flamingos lifting off, and an alligator being hauled out of a suburban pool by a wildlife officer.

The real thing it’s modeled on, the Everglades, is weirder. Rockstar’s gators are the famous part. Florida’s scariest predator is a snake nobody in the trailers has shown yet.

What Rockstar Has Shown of Grassrivers

Rockstar’s regional postcard for Grassrivers is headlined “Welcome to the Wetlands,” and its copy reads like a dare: “You never know what lies beneath the surface of this primordial expanse. The gators may be the most famous attraction, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves” (Official, rockstargames.com/VI).

Trailer 1, at about the 20-second mark, puts an airboat in Grassrivers and a flock of flamingos taking flight (Official). Trailer 2 has Jason piloting a helicopter with Brian as side gunner, chasing an airboat across the same wetlands. The August Extended Look includes a stretch of actual gameplay: an airboat along a swamp waterway, past an observation tower (Official).

The Pool Gator Is the Most Florida Shot in the Trailer

At 0:42 in Trailer 1, an officer from a unit called POACH wrestles an alligator out of a backyard pool. The on-screen caption: “Stay alert VC! Remember to check for uninvited guests before the pool party.” Five seconds later, CCTV footage shows a gator strolling into a gas-station convenience store (Official).

Both are gags in Trailer 1’s fake social-media feed, and press at the time, including the Guardian and IGN, read them as parodies of real Florida viral videos (Reported). Which they are. The joke works because it’s barely a joke.

The National Park Service calls the American alligator a keystone species of the Everglades, “closely identified with the Everglades” like no other animal, and notes that female gators’ nesting even helps build peat (Official, NPS). In the game, the gator is the mascot. Rockstar sells it back to you, too: the in-universe TV character Macca the Gator fronts official merch.

The Real Everglades Has Gators and Crocodiles

Here’s the detail most people miss. Of the 23 crocodilian species in the world, two are native to the U.S., and, per NPS, “south Florida is the only place where both of these species coexist” (Official). Alligators range across the Southeast. The American crocodile hangs on in the brackish edges where fresh water meets Florida Bay.

Rockstar has shown alligators, plenty of them. A crocodile? Not in any official footage we’ve seen (Not confirmed). If “far deadlier predators” is a hint, a croc would be the purist’s pick.

The park itself is huge: Everglades National Park protects 1.5 million acres of wetland, forest and marine habitat, and was established in 1947 as the first national park created for its biodiversity (Official, NPS).

Burmese Pythons Are the Everglades’ Real Villain

If Rockstar wanted a monster, Florida already built one. The U.S. Geological Survey says it’s “incredibly difficult” to count Burmese pythons, but “conservatively, tens of thousands” live in the Greater Everglades (Estimate, USGS). They’re now spread across more than a thousand square miles of southern Florida, coast to coast.

The damage is measurable. A 2012 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences compared road surveys in Everglades National Park before and after pythons took hold. From 2003 to 2011, raccoon sightings fell 99.3%, opossums 98.9%, bobcats 87.5%. Rabbits and foxes weren’t seen at all (Reported, peer-reviewed study). The park’s own summary: pythons are “probably the main reason” mammals have declined so sharply (Official, NPS).

How they got there is the most Leonida sentence in this article. NPS says pythons are established in the park “due to accidental or intentional release of captive pet animals.” Florida Man, basically, but with a snake.

And yes, the two famous predators fight. USGS documents alligator-versus-python struggles in the park, noting that sometimes the python loses and “in other situations pythons have eaten alligators.” No GTA trailer has topped that.

Does GTA 6 Have Hunting or Wildlife Systems?

Rockstar hasn’t published a wildlife feature list. What exists:

• IGN’s August hands-off preview listed a zoo among activities and said wild animals can be studied, with a checklist derived from Red Dead Redemption 2 (Reported).
• Rockstar’s Mount Kalaga postcard, in the north, advertises “prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails” (Official copy). That’s ad copy for a region, not a confirmed hunting mechanic.
• Store copy for the Ultimate Edition references fishing gear from an in-world brand (Store listing).

Whether you can hunt in Grassrivers, whether pythons exist in code, whether gators wander into pools on their own: Not confirmed. Our GTA 6 wildlife page tracks what’s been shown.

What We Still Don’t Know

• Whether Grassrivers has pythons, crocodiles or a panther analogue.
• What “far deadlier predators” means: animals, people, or both.
• Whether the animal checklist IGN described covers wetland species.
• Whether gators roam freely or appear in scripted moments.

November 19 Puts You in the Airboat

Rockstar built Grassrivers from the postcard version of South Florida: airboats, flamingos, gators in pools. The real Everglades adds a 99.3% raccoon crash and an invasive snake nobody can count. On November 19 we find out how much of that Rockstar was brave enough to put under the surface.
