Former Rockstar Developer Tells BBC GTA 6 Leaks Won't Matter by Launch

Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij told BBC Newsbeat that GTA 6 leaks will have zero impact by launch, while unverified 30-minute runtime claims circulate.

Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij told BBC Newsbeat that this week's GTA 6 leaks will not matter by launch. Though Vermeij confirmed he has not watched the leaked clips, he predicted the footage will be forgotten once the game arrives.

The interview
BBC Newsbeat spoke with Obbe Vermeij (Rockstar North technical director, 1995–2009) and IGN's Wesley Yin-Poole.

Vermeij's record
Credited on GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA IV. Left Rockstar in June 2009.

The schedule
27 August Extended Look (Netflix 3:00 p.m. ET; YouTube and Rockstar site 9:00 p.m. ET) and 19 November launch date remain unchanged.

Runtime claim
Recaps claimed BBC reported a "30-minute special." The BBC article and archive state "a Netflix special" with no confirmed runtime.

Vermeij's Perspective: Zero Long-Term Impact

Vermeij served as technical director at Rockstar North from August 1995 to June 2009, spanning GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA IV. While his veteran background offers historical context on how Rockstar weathered past controversies, he left the studio fifteen years ago and confirmed to BBC Newsbeat that he has not viewed this week's leaked clips.

His assessment is straightforward: commercial momentum overrides early asset exposure. "I think it will have no impact at all whatsoever," Vermeij told BBC. "People will have forgotten about it by the time the game comes out."

Industry Reaction and Staff Impact

IGN Director of News Wesley Yin-Poole offered Newsbeat a parallel perspective, emphasizing the emotional toll on the development team versus the macro commercial reality. While unauthorized footage undermines years of confidential work by developers, Yin-Poole noted that most players reserve final judgment for finished gameplay. Ultimately, GTA 6 remains a massive cultural event where pre-release leak cycles will become a development footnote.

Schedule Unchanged and the BBC Runtime Myth

Rockstar has issued no statements regarding the leaks, and the official release calendar remains firmly in place. The 27 August Extended Look airs on Netflix at 3:00 p.m. ET before hitting YouTube and rockstargames.com/VI at 9:00 p.m. ET. The leaks have not delayed the broadcast, nor has the Netflix showcase transformed into a TV series.

Third-party recaps on Reddit, eXputer, and Notebookcheck misattributed a "30-minute special" runtime to BBC Newsbeat. Both the live BBC article and its 23 August archive merely describe "a Netflix special" without listing any minute count. Until Rockstar or Netflix publish official metadata, runtime claims remain unverified speculation.

Left in 2009. Hasn't watched the clips. That's a vibe check, not a forecast.

Forgotten by November is easy to say when you left in 2009. Reminds me why RDR2 downtime worked.
