GTA 6 Is Eligible for The Game Awards 2026: The Cutoff, the Jury and Rockstar’s Record

GTA 6 makes The Game Awards cutoff by about a day and a half. Here’s what the official rules say, who votes, and how Red Dead Redemption 2 did in 2018.
GTA 6 is eligible for The Game Awards 2026. The show’s rules say a game has to be on sale by 9 p.m. PT on Friday, November 20, which is midnight ET going into November 21. GTA 6 launches November 19. That’s about a day and a half of slack.
Somewhere along the way, a tight deadline turned into a conspiracy theory about the show bending its rules for Rockstar. The rules page doesn’t support that, and it’s more interesting than the drama anyway.
Claim. “The Game Awards moved its cutoff so GTA 6 could win Game of the Year.”
Evidence. The official FAQ sets the 2026 cutoff at November 20, 9 p.m. PT, and says producer Geoff Keighley “is not a member of the jury and does not vote on the nominees or winners” (Official). Polygon reports last year’s cutoff was November 21, 2025 (Reported).
Verdict. Eligible: Official. A rule change made for Rockstar: no evidence. Whether GTA 6 gets nominated, or wins: Not confirmed.

- Nov 17, 2025: last year’s nominees announced, four days before the cutoff.

The Game Awards 2026 Cutoff Date
The FAQ is blunt: “Games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT.” For the fan-voted Players’ Voice category, the window runs to November 30 (Official).
Polygon summed it up as “This year’s biggest game just barely makes the cutoff date,” and noted that the 2026 date “is close to last year’s cutoff of Nov. 21, 2025” (Reported). That’s the whole scandal: the deadline moved by about a day, in the direction of “earlier.”
Who Picks the Nominees, and Who Doesn’t
According to the FAQ, nominees in most categories “are chosen by an international jury of over 100 global media and influencer outlets.” Each outlet sends one unranked ballot with its top five per category, and the five games that appear on the most ballots get nominated (Official).
Winners come from a blend: 90% jury, 10% public fan vote. The FAQ also says Keighley isn’t on the jury and doesn’t vote, that the advisory board “has no involvement in the awards process,” and that publishers find out nominees and winners at the same time as everyone else. “There are no exceptions to this rule” (Official).
The Real Problem Is Time
A game that’s eligible still has to be played. The FAQ allows for this: publishers “may provide advance or pre-release access to games for critical evaluation” to meet balloting deadlines (Official).
Polygon pointed out that last year’s nominees were announced on November 17, 2025, before that year’s cutoff, and warned that if Rockstar holds codes back over leak worries, “the judges would have very little time” (Reported). Insider Gaming has reported that reviews will land before launch, but the embargo date hasn’t been made public (Reported). The 2026 nominee date isn’t on the FAQ (Not confirmed).
Rockstar’s Last Run at The Game Awards
The last new Rockstar game in the race was Red Dead Redemption 2. The show’s 2018 winners page calls it “the night’s most awarded game.” It won Best Narrative, Best Score/Music (Woody Jackson and Daniel Lanois), Best Audio Design, and Best Performance for Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan (Official).
It didn’t win the big one. “God of War Wins Game of the Year,” the same page says. Rockstar went home with four trophies and watched Kratos take the big one.
Where GTA 6 Stands
Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick said on the November 6, 2025 earnings call that Rockstar’s Metacritic scores, “with very few exceptions, have been over 95” (Official, call transcript). That’s a track record, not a nomination. Polygon’s take is that GTA 6 “has a good chance of leading Game of the Year discourse,” in a year it says has “a big cluster of similarly high-scoring titles” (Reported).
What We Don’t Know
- When the 2026 nominees will be announced (Not confirmed).
- When jury outlets get GTA 6 code (Not confirmed).
- Whether GTA 6 is nominated in any category (Not confirmed).
The show is December 10 at 7:30 p.m. ET. GTA 6 just has to come out first, and that part is on the calendar.
