Eurogamer Says You Can Play Jason Alone and Swap Mid-Chase

Eurogamer's August 27, 2026 readout of a Dazed preview lets you play Jason alone, swap to Lucia in the same car, and flip from driving to shooting mid-chase. The quiet seat is a body now.

Rockstar's printed line is still the couple. The Trailer 2 Newswire names Jason and Lucia, an easy score gone wrong, and a criminal conspiracy across Leonida that forces them to rely on each other if they want to make it out alive. The Rockstar Store repeats that synopsis, and an image filename on that page is 02_-_Jason_Duval_01.jpg, with alt text placing Jason to the right of a green motorcycle. Two names in one getaway, stuck together after the score blows: that is the official frame for the GTA 6 Jason protagonist.

You can take his wheel mid-chase

Eurogamer calls it a first for GTA: play as Jason or Lucia separately or together, and switch while they share the scene. On the car ride, Jason can have the wheel while Lucia scrolls in-game social feeds. In the chase, you flip between driving as one and shooting as the other.

GTA V let you bounce among Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, usually between jobs. Franklin was the quiet lead, and players still used him when the job needed a calm driver. This handoff sits inside one pursuit. Lucia can take the gun while Jason holds the lane, or you put her on the wheel and take the shots yourself. If the Dazed account holds, he is a body you inhabit, leave, and return to during the score, not a partner who only exists in her cutscene.

How you play him can move the pair

Eurogamer describes the relationship as core, changed by the situations and by how you react while controlling either character. Named couple time is the beach and a jetski. In GTA V, loyalty mostly waited on a mission trigger. RDR2's honour was a personal track on Arthur, not a second lead whose afternoon on the water could shift the partnership. Eurogamer also describes a morality system a few steps beyond RDR2 honour, and says the preview gave no rules for it. The activities the preview actually names are the beach, the jetski, and that driver-to-shooter swap.

Rob Nelson, whom Eurogamer identifies as Rockstar North head of development and co-studio head, is quoted in that preview.

We want to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters.

Eurogamer ties the line to expression, not to a defense of how quiet Jason plays in the trailer. Nelson wants the expression. He also wants Jason and Lucia to stay themselves. The same preview says inhabitants react differently if you open-carry a rifle.

Viewers already argue the seat is empty

On GTA 6: Jason Is Completely Misunderstood, the original poster writes that Rockstar is holding a stronger Jason for later, "the level headed and frounded type." A reply maps him to Reacher: grounded, calm, collected, awkward in a room, fine in a confrontation. Against that, one viewer wants Trevor back and says they do not want a grounded type. These are arguments about a performance, not studio notes.

On Why Jason Will Become the Greatest GTA Protagonist, commenters argue his rank against Niko, CJ, Luis, and Franklin. PTSD and a veteran reading himself into the character show up as personal takes on Jason Is Completely Misunderstood, not on that ranking thread. The Army-then-Keys bio behind those reads lives on GTABase, a community page, not in the Trailer 2 sentence. Reject that reserved register and the switch is only the way back to Lucia.

Eurogamer states the release is 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Hand Lucia the gun the way that preview describes, and GTA 6 character switching only counts while someone stays in his seat. The getaway needs a driver. The threads are already asking for Trevor in that chair.
