Matthew Ball's GTA 6 Reply Still Fits a PS5 Preorder Skew
Xbox can match its console share on GTA 6 and still watch most preorders land on PS5. IGN's September 24 account of Matthew Ball's reply, set against more than 95 million PS5s and an analyst gap of at least 2:1, is how both headlines stay true.
IGN's September 24 account lets a player still picking a box hold two headlines at once: Xbox can match its console share on Grand Theft Auto VI and still sit under a GTA 6 PS5 preorder skew that puts most copies on PlayStation. Happy on Xbox is not even with PlayStation.
Ball Answered With Records and a Share
The alarm landed inside layoff coverage. IGN reported a claim that GTA 6 preorders are heavily skewed toward PlayStation 5, and that PS5 dominance was "ringing yet more alarm bells" about Xbox, in the same stretch as Xbox layoffs and a studios reorganization. Xbox CSO Matthew Ball answered Tom Warren in the line IGN printed.
Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of preorders to be matching our share of the console market.
He is happy, the game is breaking Xbox records, and the share matches the console market. Fleeca crews and Cayo invites in GTA V never crossed boxes, so more copies meant easier fill.
A 95 Million PS5 Makes Both Lines Fit
As of June 30, PS5 had sold more than 95 million units, Microsoft has not announced Xbox Series X and S sales in years, and IGN says analysts have suggested PS5 is outselling the Xbox Series range by at least 2:1. If that ratio holds, IGN says that would mean roughly twice as many PS5 preorders. A heavy skew and a matched Xbox share can describe those same preorders.
That 2:1 gap is an analyst suggestion IGN reported, not a published Series sales total. The Series X copy you buy can be a platform record and the shorter line at the same time.
Sony Is Already Selling the Controller
The install base is not the only reason a PS5 preorder looks louder. IGN reported Sony's partnership push as PS5-focused gameplay, PS5 hardware in the marketing, a custom GTA 6 UI, DualSense speaker and haptics posts, and a PlayStation app logo in GTA 6 colors with pale tree fronds. Those details are Sony's posts as IGN describes them, not a PlayStation exclusive.
The extra this time is a controller you can hear, and an Xbox buyer this week gets records and a market-share match instead. Launch stays November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.
Rockstar Is Selling Leonida
Rockstar's GTA VI page sells Jason and Lucia relying on each other through a criminal conspiracy across Leonida, plus pre-order benefits and a Vice City and Leonida album pitch.
Comments Already Ran the Install-Base Math
Viewers on YouTube are treating a PS5-heavy book as obvious arithmetic. One commenter wrote, "This was gonna happen anyway, more people own a PlayStation and GTA 6 is highly sought after." Replies cite a roughly 3:1 gap. That figure is viewer talk, wider than IGN's analyst line of at least 2:1.
A minority reads Ball as having killed the skew, and replies say a PS5 majority can still be true because of the install base. Others would only trust a number a company printed. On a second YouTube video, one buyer says they took Xbox so a brother in another house can share the digital copy, which is unverified comment talk.
If your crew already lives on one network, Ball's fall records are permission to stay. A matched Xbox share can be a record and the shorter line when a GTA 6 PS5 preorder skew follows a console gap of at least 2:1. November 19 still shows up on both boxes, and Sony's controller pitch is the one already posted.
