From Network TV to Netflix: How GTA Marketing Changed Between GTA III and GTA 6

GTA V sold with network TV and midnight lines. GTA 6 premiered on Netflix and put a sign on an NBA arena. How Rockstar’s marketing changed, and what never did.
In 2013, Rockstar sold GTA V with network TV, magazine covers and midnight lines at GameStop. In 2026, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says GTA 6 “won’t be buying a lot of network television.” Instead the game premiered gameplay on Netflix, put a sign on an NBA arena roof and booked a whole HEAT game.
Same company, same playbook goal: make a video game feel like a public event. The billboard just moved.
Claim. “GTA 6’s marketing is unlike anything Rockstar has done before.”
Evidence. Official: Zelnick said GTA 6 gets “a very significant broad based marketing campaign that reflects where audiences and attention is today,” not network TV. Official: the Extended Look premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on August 27, six hours before YouTube. Reported: Rockstar paid Miami-Dade $975,000 for a “Welcome to Vice City” roof sign. Reported: Rockstar was also taking over real streets back in 2008, and fighting a transit agency over it.
Verdict. The channels are new. The instinct is 25 years old: put Vice City, or Liberty City, in the real world and let people argue about it.
- 2001: GTA III’s US cover is redone after 9/11 into the grid art that became the series style (Reported).
- 2008: GTA IV ads come down in Chicago’s transit system. Take-Two sues (Reported, LA Times).
- 2013: GTA V hits $1 billion in three days (Official, Take-Two).
- Dec 2023: Trailer 1 sets a Guinness record, 90.4 million YouTube views in 24 hours (Reported).
- May 2025: six official Leonida postcards appear on Rockstar’s site.
- Aug 27, 2026: Extended Look premieres on Netflix.
- Oct 1, 2026: the Kaseya Center sign lights up. Nov 18: A Night in Vice City.
Official
Zelnick on network TV and on Netflix. Netflix 3 p.m. ET / YouTube 9 p.m. ET schedule. Six Leonida postcards. HEAT “A Night in Vice City,” Nov 18, 7:00 p.m. ET. GTA V’s $1B in three days.
Reported
GTA III cover change, GTA IV Chicago ad fight, Trailer 1 Guinness record, Kaseya sign at $975,000, Miami Beach chair deal.
Estimate / Not confirmed
GTA 6’s marketing budget. A commissioner’s “$150 million” figure is his own guess.
GTA III and Vice City Sold an Attitude
The grid cover art you can picture with your eyes closed became the house style for every GTA since, GTA 6’s key art included.
That’s the first lesson of GTA marketing. The brand isn’t a screenshot. It’s a look and a tone, and the look was born in a hurry.
GTA IV Put Liberty City on Real Streets, and Got Sued Over It
By 2008, GTA was a mainstream lightning rod. The Los Angeles Times reported that Mothers Against Drunk Driving objected to GTA IV letting players drive “drunk,” and that the Chicago Transit Authority pulled GTA IV ads from its subway, leading Take-Two to sue in U.S. District Court in New York for breach of contract (Reported).
Read that next to 2026 Miami and it rhymes. A public agency, a crime game, an ad on public property, and an argument about what a city wants to be associated with. Miami-Dade commissioners are having the same fight right now over the airport and Metromover.
GTA V Was the Last Network-TV Blockbuster
GTA V launched September 17, 2013, and Take-Two announced “worldwide retail sales of more than $1 billion during its first three days on sale,” the fastest any entertainment property had reached that mark (Official). It was the peak of the old model: TV spots, retail midnight launches, lines out the door.
Zelnick drew the line himself this May. Asked by GamesIndustry.biz whether a game this famous even needs marketing, he said: “The answer is of course we need to market it.” Then: “13 years ago we were still buying network television. We won’t be buying a lot of network television” (Official, CEO interview).
Trailer 1 Turned a YouTube Upload Into a World Record
On December 4, 2023, Trailer 1 pulled 90,421,491 views in its first 24 hours on YouTube. Guinness World Records recognized it as the most viewed video game reveal on YouTube in 24 hours, plus the most liked game trailer and the most-viewed non-music YouTube video in a day (Reported, Push Square citing Guinness).
Then Rockstar did something old-fashioned: it went quiet. Trailer 2 came in May 2025, alongside six official regional postcards on its site: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park (Official). A travel brochure for a state that doesn’t exist.
Netflix, an Arena Roof and a Basketball Court
The 2026 campaign started where the audience already is. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix August 27 at 3 p.m. ET, then on YouTube and Rockstar’s site at 9 p.m. ET (Official). Zelnick called it “a first-of-its-kind partnership with Netflix” and “part of Rockstar Games’ marketing strategy” (Official, via TechRadar).
Then it went physical, Miami-style. A pink “Welcome to Vice City” sign on the Kaseya Center roof, lit October 1, under a $975,000 county deal (Reported). A Miami Beach vote to negotiate “discreet” Vice City branding on beach chairs and umbrellas (Reported). And the HEAT playing the Bucks as “Vice City” on November 18 at 7:00 p.m. ET, on a one-night court in a new uniform (Official, HEAT). The full log lives on our marketing tracker.
One thing Zelnick ruled out: real ads inside the game you buy. “It’s difficult for me to believe that we would want to have interstitial advertising in a game that someone paid 70 or 80 bucks for. It would seem unfair,” he told The Game Business in March (Official, CEO interview). GTA keeps its fake brands.
How Much Is Rockstar Spending?
Nobody official has said. At an October Miami-Dade meeting, Commissioner René Garcia claimed he had “done some research” and Rockstar was spending “at least a minimum of $150 million” on marketing (Estimate, his own figure, reported by The Miamian). Take-Two does not break out a marketing budget for a single game.
What We Still Don’t Know
- Whether there’s a Trailer 3 before launch.
- The total marketing spend.
- Whether the Miami-Dade airport and transit plan survives its October 20 vote.
- What happens at the Kaseya Center on November 18 beyond the court and uniform.
From a rushed cover to a Netflix premiere, GTA marketing has always done one thing: make the fiction feel like it’s already outside your window. On November 18 it’ll be on a basketball court. On November 19 it’s on your console.
