Lucia Is From Liberty City: What GTA 6's Ties to GTA 4 and GTA 5 Do (and Don't) Tell Us

A Rockstar writer told LOVE that Lucia's hometown is Liberty City, GTA 4's town. That puts Leonida in the same modern GTA world. It doesn't put Liberty City on the map.

Lucia Caminos grew up in Liberty City, the New York stand-in from GTA IV. Rockstar writer Alexa D’Agostino told LOVE magazine, in Issue 27 on sale October 5, that her own mother “grew up in Newark, New Jersey, close to Lucia’s hometown of Liberty City,” and Lucia’s official bio already mentions her family’s “days in Liberty City.”

Rockstar has not announced Liberty City as a playable place in GTA 6. Lucia has a past in Niko’s town. You don’t get a ticket there.

Claim. Lucia’s Liberty City roots put GTA 6 in the same modern GTA world as GTA IV and GTA V. They’re backstory, not a map expansion.

Evidence. Official: Rockstar’s Lucia bio (May 6, 2025) says she wants the good life “her mom has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City.” Reported (LOVE Issue 27, via GTAVice and RockstarINTEL): D’Agostino calls Liberty City “Lucia’s hometown.” Reported (Kotaku, August 27): the Extended Look shows eCola and Sprunk in Jason’s fridge, a Gruppe-Sechs armored truck and a Fleeca logo, all brands from earlier games.

Verdict. A shared world is the safe read, and the brands back it up. Rockstar hasn’t used the phrase “HD Universe” for GTA 6, though, so that label is ours. A playable Liberty City or returning GTA IV and V characters: no evidence.

  1. April 29, 2008 — GTA IV rebuilds Liberty City from scratch. Niko Bellic gets off the boat.
  2. 2009 — Rockstar says the GTA III-era games are “a different world” from GTA IV.
  3. September 17, 2013 — GTA V moves the modern world to Los Santos. Packie McReary from GTA IV can join your heist crew.
  4. December 4, 2023 — Trailer 1: Vice City, Leonida, and Lucia in a penitentiary.
  5. May 6, 2025 — Trailer 2 and the Lucia bio: “their days in Liberty City.”
  6. August 27, 2026 — the Extended Look: eCola, Sprunk, Gruppe-Sechs, Fleeca, and a Lovefist T-shirt.
  7. October 5, 2026 — LOVE Issue 27: “Lucia’s hometown of Liberty City.”

Official
Lucia’s bio: “since their days in Liberty City.” The game is set in Vice City and the state of Leonida. Jason’s bio puts him in the Keys after the Army.

Reported
Liberty City is “Lucia’s hometown” (D’Agostino, LOVE). Raul is the “older mentor” with the local knowledge the leads lack (Humphries, LOVE). Returning brands spotted in Rockstar footage (Kotaku, IGN).

No evidence
A Liberty City prologue. Niko, Michael or other GTA IV and V characters in GTA 6. Lucia being related to anyone from GTA IV.

What Rockstar Actually Said About Lucia and Liberty City

Here’s the full line, as quoted by RockstarINTEL from LOVE: “When it came to writing Lucia, I thought of the women I know—my mother was an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, close to Lucia’s hometown of Liberty City. I thought about the way she raised me: rowdy, kind, but not to take any shit” (Reported).

Notice the geography. Newark is real. Liberty City is fiction. In GTA IV’s map, New Jersey is played by Alderney, but D’Agostino talked like a person, not a wiki. The point is that Lucia comes from a real kind of place: immigrant family, East Coast, tough mom. That matches what Rockstar printed back in May 2025. Her father taught her to fight as soon as she could walk, fighting for her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary, and she wants the good life her mom has dreamed of “since their days in Liberty City” (Official).

D’Agostino’s goal was a woman who can “stand tall next to the likes of Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic.” One of those is a cowboy from Red Dead Redemption 2, a different series. That’s a comparison of weight, not a crossover. Nobody’s riding a horse into Vice City.

Liberty City Is GTA IV’s City, Which Puts Leonida in the Same World

Rockstar runs two continuities. The older one covers GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. The newer one started with GTA IV in 2008 and carried on in GTA V. Fans call them the 3D and HD universes. In a 2009 Q&A, Rockstar spelled out the split itself: the GTA III timeline “is a different world to Grand Theft Auto IV — only the branding and certain radio personalities exist across both worlds.” It added the best line in the canon debate: “most people from the previous world are dead.”

In 2012, The Guardian reported Dan Houser’s rule for GTA V: no one from before GTA IV would appear, because the move to HD made CJ, Toni “and co” into “mythical characters from a bygone era” (Reported).

So when a Rockstar writer says “Liberty City” in 2026, it lands in the modern map of America, the one with Niko’s Broker and Michael’s Los Santos. That’s the real news in the line. It’s our reading, though, not a Rockstar statement, so treat the “HD Universe” label as an Estimate.

GTA 4 and GTA 5 Mentioned Other Cities Without Letting You Go There

Rockstar has a habit, and it’s a useful guide. GTA IV had a radio station called Vice City FM, and San Andreas’s cities came up in conversation without ever showing up on the map. GTA V let you hire Packie McReary, an Irish crook from GTA IV, for heists in Los Santos. In neither game could you drive to the other city.

Other cities are where characters come from, where the radio ads point, and where the jokes about old friends go. They’re not DLC promises. Lucia’s Liberty City childhood fits that pattern perfectly: a past that explains her, in a place you hear about. If Rockstar breaks the habit, it hasn’t told anyone.

The Brands Already Crossed Over

The world-sharing you can actually see is on the shelves. Kotaku’s frame-by-frame of the August 27 Extended Look spotted Sprunk and eCola cans in Jason’s fridge, a Gruppe-Sechs armored truck and a Fleeca logo. Fleeca and Gruppe-Sechs are straight out of GTA V and GTA Online (Reported). IGN’s Trailer 1 breakdown in December 2023 found Pißwasser, now in an alcohol-free “Nein” version (Reported).

Kotaku also spotted a woman wearing a Lovefist T-shirt. Lovefist is the band from 2002’s Vice City, an old-world name. That’s exactly what Rockstar’s 2009 rule allows: branding crosses universes, people don’t. It’s the same reason the Vercetti Estate is a plaque, not a cameo (our story). A T-shirt is a wink. It isn’t Tommy.

Raul Is the Vice City Native. Jason and Lucia Are Not.

Put the bios side by side and a pattern shows up. Lucia comes from Liberty City by way of a penitentiary. Jason grew up around grifters, did a stint in the Army, and ended up in the Keys working for drug runners (Official). Neither one is a Vice City kid.

That’s where Raul Bautista comes in. Narrative chief Rupert Humphries told LOVE the leads have something “hopeful and naive” about them, so Rockstar “needed an older mentor character to bring them into the large-scale heists and set pieces.” Per GTAVice, Raul has the local and criminal knowledge Jason and Lucia lack when they get to Vice City, and he embodies the city with a “knowing Miami-cool” (Reported).

Some recaps call that a contradiction, because Rockstar’s own card calls Raul a “seasoned bank robber” whose recklessness “raises the stakes with every score” (Official). It isn’t one. The guy who teaches you heists was never going to be an accountant. Full card: Raul Bautista.

What Fans Are Guessing, and Why We’re Not Buying It Yet

  • A Liberty City prologue. A popular YouTube theory imagines Lucia’s childhood as a playable opening. No evidence. Rockstar hasn’t named any playable area outside Leonida.
  • Returning characters. Fan lists float Michael De Santa or GTA IV’s nightclub owner Tony Prince turning up in Vice City. No evidence. Every character Rockstar has named so far is new.
  • Lucia related to Luis Lopez. Recap comments make her his cousin, niece or half-sister. That’s fan genealogy, not a Rockstar sentence.
  • Who plays Lucia. Rockstar hasn’t named her actress, and neither will we until it does.

What We Still Don’t Know

  • How much of Lucia’s Liberty City past shows up in the game, whether in dialogue, flashbacks or nothing at all.
  • Whether her mom, or anyone else from that life, appears in Leonida.
  • Whether any GTA IV or GTA V character gets so much as a radio mention.
  • Whether Rockstar will ever call this the HD Universe out loud.
