GTA 6’s “Leonida Man”: The Florida Man Clips in Trailer 1 and Rockstar’s Rules for Satire

Trailer 1 turned Florida Man into PlanetLeonidaMan. Which viral clips Rockstar nodded to, where the meme came from, and what Rockstar’s writers say about exaggerating, not copying.

GTA 6’s first trailer spends nearly 20 seconds on what the internet calls Florida Man: a gator pulled out of a pool, a woman twerking on a moving car, a naked man running past a gas station, all shot like phone clips with fake comments on top. One of the posting accounts is literally called PlanetLeonidaMan.

Rockstar’s writers say the point isn’t to copy Florida. It’s to blow it up until it’s funny.

Claim. “GTA 6 just recreates real Florida Man videos.”

Evidence. Official: Trailer 1 shows social-media clips, a bodycam feed and CCTV footage of Leonida chaos. Reported: IGN matched several shots to real viral moments, including the “Florida Joker” mugshot, and noted one, the woman with two hammers, came from Los Angeles. Reported: Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, told LOVE that “rather than trying to put a like-for-like of something real in the world, we have created our own slanted, overblown versions.”

Verdict. The trailer nods to real clips. Rockstar says the game itself is built on exaggeration, not copies.

  1. Feb 2013: the @_FloridaMan Twitter account turns headlines into a meme.
  2. Sept 2013: Rockstar launches Lifeinvader, a Facebook parody site, before GTA V.
  3. Dec 4, 2023: Trailer 1 introduces “Leonida Man” through phone clips and bodycams.
  4. Aug 27, 2026: the Extended Look shows Lucia scrolling a friend’s Snapmatic.
  5. Oct 5, 2026: LOVE Issue 27 prints Rockstar’s satire rules.
  6. Nov 19, 2026: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Official
Trailer 1’s social clips, bodycam and CCTV shots. The handle PlanetLeonidaMan is on screen. Lucia mentions Snapmatic in the Extended Look.

Reported
Rockstar avoids specific politicians, memes and slang (Humphries to LOVE; Rob Nelson to IGN). The phone has social feeds (Game Informer).

Not confirmed

What Trailer 1 Actually Shows

Rockstar cut the middle of Trailer 1 like a feed. At 0:42 a POACH wildlife officer drags an alligator out of a backyard pool, captioned “Stay Alert VC! Remember to check for uninvited guests before the pool party.” At 0:44 a woman twerks on the roof of a moving sedan. At 0:47 a gator wanders into a gas-station store on a security camera. At 0:49 a police bodycam, stamped “BODY 3,” follows a tactical team through a door. At 0:50 a naked man runs past a gas station under the handle PlanetLeonidaMan. A man waters an overgrown yard in his underwear, and a livestream catches a woman holding two hammers: “Neighborhood watch don’t play around in Hamlet” (Official, trailer footage).

The Real Clips Behind the Joke

Fans had the receipts within a day. IGN reported a “clear reference to the ‘Florida Joker’, a tattoo model who went viral on the internet in 2017 after his arrest mugshot revealed facial tattoos and neon green hair.” It tied the naked gardener to 2018 reports of a Florida man doing yard work naked, and said the car-twerking clip “seems similarly inspired by real-world events” (Reported).

One match isn’t Florida at all. IGN noted fans compared the hammer woman to a real image of a woman doing the same, “although she’s from Los Angeles, not Miami.” That fits what Rockstar says it’s doing: building a type, not a scrapbook.

Why Florida Man Exists in the First Place

The Miami New Times argued that Florida’s open-records laws make it easier for reporters to get arrest information than in other states. CNN added the state’s size, its weather and gaps in mental-health funding.

Not everyone laughs. The Columbia Journalism Review called Florida Man stories “one of journalism’s darkest and most lucrative cottage industries,” which “more often simply document the travails of the drug-addicted, mentally ill, and homeless.” That tension, between a punchline and real people on the worst day of their lives, is exactly what a Rockstar parody walks into.

Rockstar’s Rule: Exaggerate, Don’t Mirror

Humphries laid out the method in LOVE’s Issue 27, as printed by VGC and Eurogamer (Reported). “There is a big focus on not just holding up a mirror, but on making everything satirical, larger than life, and more grotesque. Otherwise, you could just go outside and live in the real world!” His team tries “to get to the heart of whatever issue we want to talk about and then explode the part of it we find interesting until the ridiculousness of the position becomes really clear and hopefully funny, too.”

On a straight copy of today: “It’s not interesting. If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today’s world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face.” And on what they chose: “conspiracy theories, the strange ways the public reacts to everyday occurrences.”

He also drew a line. “We don’t want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement, or anything like that,” Humphries told LOVE. Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head, told IGN the same about very specific political issues, memes and slang: they “will date fast” (Reported). Florida still gets its politics, though. Humphries said you can “see a sign for an election, receive a robocall from a campaign, or hear a commercial on the radio,” and there are “political talk shows on the radio.”

Who Writes the Background Noise

The jokes don’t only live in missions. Humphries told LOVE there is “a specific team of pedestrian dialogue writers in LA and then a team of advertising and comedy writers across New York, LA, and London” (Reported). Writing director James Horton put it more bluntly: “there is no ‘background’ in this game; there’s just foreground that you’re not paying attention to right now.” Nelson told IGN there are more radio and TV ads than ever. Our LOVE magazine explainer has more from the issue.

From Lifeinvader to Snapmatic

Rockstar has been mocking social media for a while. Before GTA V launched in September 2013, it put up Lifeinvader, a Facebook parody site with taglines like “Portray the life you want online,” “Make friends with strangers” and “Making the private public.” Brands on it offered deals if you “stalk” them, including a cigarette company promising “10 percent off your first visit to a hospital” (Reported, Engadget).

GTA 6 swaps the status update for the vertical video. In the Extended Look, Lucia tells Jason, “look at Lori’s Snapmatic. Looks like they’re loving it” (Official, footage). Game Informer’s cover story says the phone carries social feeds (Reported). Our phone guide tracks what’s confirmed.

What We Don’t Know Yet

  • Whether NPCs record what you do and post it. Fans expect it. Rockstar hasn’t said.
  • How bodycams and CCTV tie into the wanted system, if at all.
  • How close any in-game character sits to a real person from a viral clip.

What’s clear is the tone. Leonida is Florida as seen through a cracked phone screen, with the volume turned up. See our setting guide for the state itself.
