How robberies work in GTA 6: Rob Nelson's full IGN interview, explained

Rob Nelson told IGN you can rob pretty much anything in GTA 6, and that robbing between story missions is something you need to do. Here is his demo as a playbook: getaway car, safe code or explosive, back exit, fence.
Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told IGN that in GTA 6 “you can rob pretty much anything,” and that robberies are “a HUGE amount of what you can and need to be doing in this game in between story missions.” IGN published the full transcript of that July demo session on October 7.
Read it as a player and it’s a playbook. Read it as Nelson and it’s a demo where he skipped the prep on purpose to see what would go wrong. Plenty did.
Claim. In GTA 6, free-roam robbery is the money engine, and the money moves the story.
Evidence. Reported: Rob Nelson told IGN you “can and need” to rob between story missions, robbed a headphone store on camera, chose between a safe’s combination and an explosive that would damage the loot, and escaped out a back exit while police gathered out front. Reported (GamesRadar in August, Game Informer in September): some story missions wait until Jason and Lucia raise cash.
Verdict. Strongly reported, not Official. It all comes from interviews and previews, not Rockstar’s pages. Payouts and the size of the cash gates: not announced.
- Pick a target. Nelson’s example: a store that sells headphones.
- Prep: park a getaway car out front. Nelson didn’t. That was the point.
- Inside: find the safe’s combination (slow) or blow it (fast, damages the loot).
- Police gather outside. Use the alternate exit.
- Lose them: alleys on foot, a clothes change, a different car, or split up.
- Sell the hot stuff to a fence. Damaged goods pay less.
- Cash unlocks the next story mission. Repeat.

Rob Nelson Says You Can Rob Pretty Much Anything
The quote, as published by IGN and transcribed by GTAVice: “You can rob pretty much anything. So we can go into this place where you buy headphones, for example, and rob it” (Reported).
Not a bank. Not a casino. A headphone store. That’s the tell. In GTA V a stick-up was a convenience-store gag with a fixed register. Nelson is describing a city where the shop you walk past is a target if you decide it is. Later in the same demo, Jason and Lucia take a ride-share to a pawn shop robbery, and Nelson calls the ride “a good way to do fast travel.”
The bigger line is about time. Talking about the Extended Look, Nelson said “in just one little sequence we show a couple of robberies, which represents a HUGE amount of what you can and need to be doing in this game in between story missions.” Need is the word to underline. Rockstar is designing robbery as the job between jobs.
Prep the Getaway Before You Walk In
At the headphone store, Nelson narrated his own mistake: “I should really be preparing for this robbery. Like by putting a vehicle out front. But I’m not going to, we’re just going to see what happens” (Reported).
So the first move in the playbook is the boring one. Park the car where you’ll need it. And pick the car with the robbery in mind. Nelson told IGN that every weapon you’ve bought rides in the back of your personal vehicle, which you can call at any time, and that trunks hold spare clothes. The getaway car is your gun locker and your wardrobe. Leave it four blocks away and you’ve left both.
The other prep is your partner. When Jason and Lucia are together, Nelson said, “the partner can drive pretty well, so you can often have the partner drive to get you away from the cops, and you, as the player, can be shooting behind” (Reported). GTAVice notes that works in open-world robberies, not just scripted missions.
Combination or Explosive: The Safe Decides Your Payday
Inside, Nelson found the safe and went looking for its combination. He had an explosive on him. He didn’t use it, because blowing the safe would have damaged some of what was inside (Reported, IGN transcript via GTAVice).
This is the choice the August previews called greed versus speed. The code keeps the loot whole and costs you time. The charge saves time and costs you money. Every second you spend spinning a dial, the police outside are getting organized. There is no right answer, which is the point of the design. There is a wrong one, and it’s standing at the safe for a full minute with no car out front.
Police Will Surround the Store, So Find the Back Door
While Nelson worked the safe, police began gathering outside. He left through a rear exit (Reported). Some locations have alternate exits, and finding them before you need them is the cheap kind of prep.
Out on the street, his advice for a three-star getaway in the city: “Your best option is usually to do this – get off the streets and get on foot into the alleys.” A very fast car or a sports bike can outrun it. A normal sedan in traffic usually can’t. Nelson also said the streets are “narrower and more realistic in terms of scale,” which makes driving “slightly more challenging.”
The cops are also looking for you specifically. Change clothes and you shed heat. Switch cars and they stop recognizing the old one. And because police know they’re hunting a couple, Jason and Lucia can split up (Reported). In one escape, Lucia hid in a convenience store and bought gum. Nelson said food gives a real health boost. Robbery is a sport. Snacks count.
Fences Pay Less for Damaged Goods
The robbery doesn’t end when the stars do. On the demo’s detour, Jason spotted a police impound lot holding an Infernus they’d been asked to steal. Nelson hadn’t heard that dialogue before. They took the job. The car got banged up, and Nelson said: “I can actually repair this car here because the car fence will give you less money for it if it’s damaged” (Reported). The Infernus also carried a tracker that could find it when it moved slowly, so the trick was to keep it fast.
The same rule fits the safe. Damage costs money, whether it’s a dented supercar or blown-up valuables. For how bank cash, pocket cash and stolen goods are reported to differ, read GTA 6 Cash Is Physical Until You Bank It. For the theft tools and scanner, see Rob Nelson’s car theft breakdown.
One piece is printed, not reported. The Ultimate Edition store listing lets you deposit stolen goods to be fenced at Paradise Garage and Shore Court, and includes a PTT YOUNGIN$ compound raid (Store listing).
Missions Have Optional Routes and Money Gates
Nelson gave IGN two Extended Look examples. The tower-block escape has multiple ways out. In the Raul mission, Jason shoots while Lucia drives, then control switches and you drive: “There is an optimal route that you’re told to get out, but if you don’t follow it, you can still get out – the mission is essentially a police chase” (Reported).
He added that whenever a mission turns into a wanted level or a robbery, Rockstar tries to keep it consistent with how those systems work in the open world. So the playbook above isn’t a side game. It’s the same rules the story runs on.
And the story waits for the money. GamesRadar’s August preview coverage and Game Informer’s September 29 cover story reported that some missions don’t start until Jason and Lucia raise the cash (Reported). Nobody has reported a dollar figure. Rockstar hasn’t printed one either.
What We Still Don’t Know About GTA 6 Robberies
- Payouts. No store, safe or fence price has been published.
- How big the money gates are, and how much grinding they need. Estimate: nobody knows.
- Whether you can burgle homes. The only “no” comes from an old leaker claim. No evidence either way.
- Hostages and zip ties. Those come from the 2022 leak, not from Rockstar or Nelson.
- Marked bills and dye packs. Some sites say they’re confirmed. We haven’t found a Rockstar or Nelson line, so they stay Unverified.
- How the Criminal Profile scores a messy robbery. Nelson told IGN there’s no right or wrong way to play, but your actions change how the world reacts and how the story plays out.
Our own coverage has changed with the evidence. In August, before the Extended Look, GTA 6 robbery is a failed score, not a heist list had only Trailer 2’s premise to go on. In September, what preview videos are arguing logged the creator debate. The Nelson transcript is the most detailed on-record description so far.
Your First Score Is Six Weeks Out
GTA 6 is out November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and US store listings unlock it at 12:00 a.m. ET. Until then, the playbook is short. Park the car first. Don’t blow the safe if you can find the code. Know where the back door is. Damaged goods sell cheap. And the story moves when the money does.
